Police say that on Tuesday around 9:00 a.m. responded to the incident at the Viertola school and urged local residents to stay at home.

The suspect, who police say is also 13, is in custody.

The school has 800 students and 90 employees. Witnesses told public broadcaster YLE that two ambulances left the scene.

Police said all those involved in the incident were minors and three of them were injured.

Primary and secondary school students aged 7-15 study at the Viertola school. As in other schools in Finland, the children had just returned to their classrooms after the long Easter weekend.

The crisis group of the city of Vantaa has been activated

Local media reported that the Vantaa City Crisis Group was activated following the shooting incident.

Images from the scene showed a large police presence outside the school.

Police urged the public to stay away from the area and stay indoors.

“Do not open the door to strangers,” police said in a statement.

Laws tightened after deadly shootings

Vantaa is the fourth largest city in Finland with a population of around 240,000.

in 2007 and in 2008 Finland has seen two deadly school shootings in the past few months, prompting tougher gun laws.

However, Finland is widely known as a country of hunters and gun enthusiasts, and according to government statistics, out of 5.5 million of the population there are 430,000 licensed gun owners.

in 2007 In the town of Tusula, an eighteen-year-old student shot dead seven students and a teacher, and the following year, another student shot dead nine students and a teacher in the town of Kauhajokis.
