Speaking by phone with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, Amir-Abdollahian “blamed the Zionist regime for the consequences of these actions and stressed that the international community must respond seriously to such criminal acts,” according to a statement from Iran’s foreign ministry.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which monitors the war and relies on a wide network of sources in Syria, said earlier that an Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate building in Damascus on Monday killed eight people, including members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). commander of foreign operations in Lebanon and Syria.

His death was confirmed by Iranian state media.

An AFP correspondent from the scene confirmed that a building next to the consulate in an upmarket district of Damascus was razed to the ground.

“Israeli rockets […] destroyed the annex of the Iranian embassy […] in Damascus, eight people were killed,” SOHR said.

“The ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus, Hossein Akbari (Hossein Akbari) and his family were not injured in the Israeli attack,” Iran’s Nour news agency said.

However, state media reported that Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one of the senior commanders of the IRGC’s foreign operations unit, the Quds (Jerusalem) Force, was killed.

Syrian Foreign Minister F. Mekdad condemned the Israeli strike and claimed that the attack would not affect relations between the two allies.

“We strongly condemn this heinous terrorist attack that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and killed many innocent people,” Mekdad said in a statement carried by Syria’s official news agency SANA.

Israel, which has repeatedly said it will not allow its irreconcilable adversary Iran to strengthen its position in Syria, has not yet commented on the report.
