Officials: Death toll in Moscow terror attack rises to 143

The death toll in a terrorist attack at a Moscow concert hall has risen to 143, Russian authorities said on Wednesday.

Five days after Friday’s attack, the deadliest Islamic State (IS) attack on European soil and Russia’s largest in two decades, Russia’s Civil Defense and Emergencies Ministry released the names of those killed.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 80 people injured in the attack, including six children, were still in hospital, Health Minister Mikhail Murashka told TASS news agency.

A source in the medical field told TASS that 205 people were given outpatient care.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova told reporters on Tuesday that many of the people in shock did not initially return to hospital for treatment.

On Friday, attackers opened fire at the Crocus City Hall concert hall near Moscow and later set the building on fire.

Four suspected attackers, who Russian state media say are all from Tajikistan, and several suspected accomplices have been arrested.

The jihadist group IS quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, but Moscow has continued to repeat its original version that the attack was linked to Ukraine.

Kyiv categorically denies any links.

Russia has been a target of IS for several years because of its role in quelling unrest in Muslim-majority regions, as well as its support for the Syrian government in the country’s ongoing civil war.
