European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Lithuania on Thursday to mark Europe Day.

On Thursday, the agenda of the President of the EC includes a meeting with the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda. As reported by the Presidency, the head of the country will discuss with U. von der Leyen the issues of support for Ukraine, the expansion of the European Union (EU), and the strengthening of the defense industry.

During her visit to Lithuania, the President of the EC will also meet with the Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilyte-Nielsen and the Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte.

During the visit, U. von der Leyen will participate in the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Lithuania’s EU membership and Europe Day in the Seimas, as well as the EU flag raising ceremony in Lukiškiau Square.

ELTA reminds that on May 9, 1950, the Schuman Declaration proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which would unite the then war-weary Europe. This community eventually became the EU.

Lithuania became an official member of the EU on May 1, 2004. Together with Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Poland, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary were admitted to the Community.
