According to CEC data, during the first two days of early voting in the presidential election and the referendum on the preservation of citizenship, a total of more than 91 thousand people voted. voters. This is 3.82 percent of the total number of voters.

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, who aspires to become the president, took part in the preliminary voting for the election of the head of the country on Thursday. According to the politician currently holding the position of Prime Minister, she had no doubts about what to mark on the ballot.

“(I hope – ELTA) for a good result. (…) I voted for the candidate I know best”, I. Šimonytė told journalists after voting.

The politician did not hide that she expects a favorable outcome of the elections. However, she added, she does not take the ratings that have risen recently.

“I never comment on poll results. (…) I am of the opinion that the real poll of politicians is the election, and after the election it will be possible to comment on something more concrete”, said the Head of the Government.

The candidate in the presidential election also rejected criticism of the wording of the referendum question. I. Šimonytė noted that the wording was chosen taking into account the recommendations of lawyers submitted to the Seimas, and the criticism that falls on it, according to I. Šimonytė, is inevitable.

“There are always criticisms of the wording. Remember also the 2019 referendum, when the wording was spelled out in great detail. People also said that we don’t really understand what we are voting for. (…) It seems to me that it is necessary to rely on the recommendation of the lawyers given to the Seimas”, said I. Šimonytė.

“I would encourage all people who support the preservation of citizenship to come and actively participate in the referendum and advocate for the amendment of the Constitution,” she added.

ELTA reminds that the three-day early voting in the presidential elections and the referendum on the preservation of citizenship began on Tuesday. The main election day is Sunday.

Eight candidates are competing for the post of the country’s leader. Among them are Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė nominated by the conservatives, representative of the Freedom Party, former chairman of the Constitutional Court (KT) Dainius Žalimas, independent candidates Ignas Vėgėlė and Eduardas Vaitkus, founder of the “Nemunos ausra” party Remigijus Žemaitaitis, “In the Name of the Democratic Union” Lietuvos” is nominated by Giedrimas Jeglinskas and Chairman of the Labor Party Andrius Mazuronis.

In the referendum ballot, it will also be proposed to abandon the sentence currently written in the Constitution: “except for individual cases provided for by law, no one can be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and another state at the same time”. This provision does not allow the preservation of Lithuanian citizenship after acquiring the citizenship of another state.

According to the CEC data, a total of 2 million people have the right to elect the president of Lithuania and express their opinion in the referendum on the preservation of citizenship this year. 385 thousand 234 voters.
