In Vilnius, on Riga Street, garbage caught fire in a truck on Tuesday morning. In order to prevent the fire from spreading, the driver dumped it on the road surface.
As Julija Samorokovskaja, head of the communication sub-department of the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, reported to BNS, the incident was reported at 7:51 a.m.
“According to preliminary data, the driver saw smoke coming from the garbage, so he dumped it on the road. When the firefighters arrived, they put out the fire, and police officers supervised public order and regulated traffic,” J. Samorokovskaja told BNS.
The company “Ecoservice” confirmed to BNS that the fire started in a garbage truck belonging to it. Daiva Skrupskelienė, the business director of the company’s waste collection, tells BNS that the driver reacted to the incident according to the provided instructions.
“The likely cause of the fire is improperly disposed waste. The driver, having noticed the smoke, acted as provided in the instructions: he immediately stopped, tried to extinguish the fire, failed, pushed the waste out of the garbage truck, reported the incident to the authorities,” said D. Skrupskelienė.
She thanked the firefighters for their prompt response and extinguishing. According to the representative of the company, the scene of the incident was cleaned up, no people were injured, and the garbage truck was not damaged either.
D. Skrupskelienė also drew the residents’ attention to the fact that dangerous, flammable, explosive substances, as well as hot ashes and batteries or accumulators, cannot be thrown into the containers, as this can become the cause of accidents.

Waste collection according to the planned route in Vilnius will be carried out according to the scheduled schedule.
