This week, an international literary congress for literary professionals is being held in Vilnius for the first time.

Vilnius’ writers, literary initiatives, events, literary scientific activities, discussions, readings, and excursions will be held at the five-day event, the capital’s municipality announced.

The congress, which brought together participants from 25 countries, is expected to have a lasting impact on the literary community.

“Not long ago, UNESCO granted Vilnius the status of a city of literature, and today we are taking the lead and, strengthening the international relations of the literary community, invited the representatives of the cities participating in the network to get acquainted with the initiatives and activities of Vilnius. I hope that this event will reveal and present the unique experience of the city, encourage new literary initiatives and projects, and strengthen the significance of literature for cities,” said Simona Bieliūnė, vice-mayor of the capital.

Six literary events will be held for the participants of the congress at the Vilnius Literary House and the Signatory House. Meetings with Vilnius festival organizers, literary press editors, publishers are also planned, guests will visit Vilnius University, Vilnius City Public Library, National Martynas Mažvydas Library.

Guests from France, Hungary, United Kingdom, Germany, USA, Sweden, Romania, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland and Slovenia are participating in the congress.
