“There is a lot of talk about the prestigious teaching profession, and there is even a certain risk that it will become so devalued, which most people would not like. Unfortunately, we probably have to admit that we will not be able to achieve this goal,” J. Karpavičienė said to “Žinių radio”, noting that President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the importance of the prestige of the teaching profession throughout his tenure.

“The president emphasized this all the time, especially when traveling around the regions, especially communicating with municipalities, because, as you know, municipalities perform that independent educational function. It is constantly emphasized and pointed out that it is necessary to find ways to solve the issue of teacher shortage”, said J. Karpavičienė.

“However, the main decisions must be made at the national level, speaking comprehensively about the entire system of teacher training,” she added.

J. Karpavičienė also emphasizes that in order for the teaching profession to become prestigious, it is necessary to increase the salary of pedagogues.

“It should be reminded that the Government’s promise that by September 1 of this year teachers’ wages must reach 130 percent. average wage, it must be maintained, achieved and accordingly it is thought that in the future, already after 2024, that 130 percent. the bar will continue to be maintained,” she said.

The presidential advisor emphasizes that in order to achieve this goal, it is also very important to improve the working conditions of teachers and to change the public’s attitude towards the teaching profession.

“I think that we lack such a national level communication campaign, emphasizing that the profession of a teacher is really special, it can be done by a person from a vocation and his activities, the profession of a teacher is extremely important,” J. Karpavičienė reflected.

ELTA reminds that the “Ideja Lietuvai” initiative started back in 2017. in autumn and invited the public to submit ideas on how to create a prosperous state for future generations.

One of the ideas is the goal of making the teaching profession prestigious by 2025.
