According to 2022 data, students who have completed their master’s studies earn 37 percent more compared to students who completed only bachelor’s studies. Also, statistics show that the employment rate of masters is better. Entrants from May 2 innovations are waiting for the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) – not only new, but also programs that respond to the modern labor market.

On May 2, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) begins admission to master’s (including Business Administration for Managers (MBA)), doctoral and professional pedagogy studies.

New study programs and individual attention

“Following today’s current affairs, in 2024 we will offer applicants a new master’s study program “Data Science and Artificial Intelligence”, we are currently waiting for its accreditation. Also, in part of the master’s programs, we will offer the opportunity to choose a learning path that allows for personalization of the learning process, flexibly responding to the learner’s expectations and goals,” says KTU vice-rector of studies Assoc. Dr. Kristina Ukvalbergienė.

In addition, this year, the methodology for calculating the competitive score for applicants to the master’s degree is also changing – it will be possible to add one year of work experience to the competitive entrance score according to the direction of the study program. It is hoped that this will enable students to apply their practical skills and experiences, enriching them with academic goals and competencies acquired at university.

In 2024, KTU offers applicants a wide selection of master’s study programs – admissions will be made to 54 master’s study programs, of which as many as 29 study programs can be studied in English.

K. Ukvalbergienė notes that innovations await not only master’s students, but also students intending to study for a doctoral degree. This year, KTU, together with Charles University in Prague, located in the Czech Republic, and Georg August Göttingen University, located in Germany, is starting to conduct doctoral studies in the field of mathematical science.

Business Administration (MBA) studies – studies that develop managerial leadership with the “spice” of technology

Today, the challenges faced by business representatives are mostly related to the impact of constantly evolving technologies on the business environment and the ability of leaders to adapt. Middle managers are responsible for implementing changes in the organization, so it is necessary to develop their ability to adapt to a changing environment.

According to KTU strategic partnerships vice-rector prof. Dr. Editas Gimžauskienė, middle managers must see the systemic picture of the organization and understand how the results of the entire organization depend on the decisions made at one level. According to her, it depends on these managers how organizational changes will be communicated, understood and implemented in the organization’s community.

“They are the first to hear the expectations of their team and must be able to adapt them to the goals set by the organization’s top managers.” Developing such competences requires managerial knowledge, practical skills, as well as strategic, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and influential leadership”, notes E. Gimžauskienė.

The changes taking place in the modern world and in Lithuania are related to the challenges posed by the green course, the circular economy and the digital transformation of business. For these reasons, middle managers not only have to develop their soft competencies, but also deepen their technological knowledge.

“KTU, being a university with a technological profile, has a unique opportunity to combine managerial and business content with technological knowledge. Transferring technological knowledge to managers in a language they can understand is one of the advantages and uniqueness of the Business Administration (MBA) study program,” notes the vice-rector of strategic partnerships at KTU.

The idea of the Business Administration (MBA) study program itself is based on the need for change leadership, and the content of the program is developed through four interdisciplinary thematic fields – strategy and business models, technological trends and transformations, innovation management and organizational development.

“The classical disciplines of business studies – marketing, finance, human resource management, are integrated into the aforementioned model blocks, and technological content – as an additional “spice” in the program. Meanwhile, practical activities are closely related to these topics and are carried out through various projects. They can be developed and implemented in organizations in the future”, says E. Gimžauskienė.

In addition to providing the latest technological and business knowledge, the program develops strategic and critical thinking, entrepreneurship and influential leadership competencies that are necessary for modern managers.

“Students’ knowledge and competences are tested both at the beginning and at the end of their studies, using international methodologies. Thus, along with the MBA diploma, which is equivalent to a master’s degree, graduates also receive a report on the progress of their competences”, says KTU vice-rector.

37% earn a master’s degree. more

According to 2022 data, students who have completed their master’s studies earn 37 percent more compared to students who completed only bachelor’s studies, and their employment rate is better.

According to KTU vice-rector of studies Assoc. Dr. K. Ukvalbergienė, these trends are determined by more than one reason – first of all, when studying in master’s studies, deeper, specialized knowledge and abilities are acquired. At this level of study, greater attention is paid to high-quality independent learning, lifelong learning competencies are strengthened, so graduates are able to adapt to rapidly changing conditions.

“After completing their bachelor’s studies, graduates apply the acquired knowledge, analyze data, plan, organize and evaluate activities. Meanwhile, strategic thinking is developed during master’s studies; those who have graduated are able to make innovative decisions in uncertain conditions and evaluate their impact, create and implement innovations or conduct various researches”, notes the vice-rector of KTU studies.

Often for students, master’s studies are an opportunity to get an education in another field. “For example, after completing engineering studies, one can choose to study another field of study if the minimum requirements are met. In this way, a broader and interdisciplinary education is acquired, which is also important for a higher salary after graduation”, says K. Ukvalbergienė.

According to her, KTU study programs pay special attention to the development of interdisciplinary and leadership competencies. For example, the unique MA+ model allows you to acquire additional competence in another field of study in addition to the chosen study program. In addition, during the study period it is possible to choose additional micromodules or solve challenges with other twelve European universities belonging to the ECIU alliance.

“In order to strengthen leadership competencies, we invite master’s students to join the GIFTed masters program, where they develop their abilities in this particular field through diverse experiences,” adds Assoc. Dr. K. Ukvalbergienė.

Doctoral studies and other study options

Students who wish to continue the path of a scientist and expand their opportunities in academic activities are invited to study in doctoral studies. Usually, studies at this level are the first step in a scientist’s career.

“I believe that doctoral studies are an essential link that connects previous education with future perspectives in the development of academic ideas. During these studies, the attitude changes and the student becomes a scientist,” says Mindaugas Dagilis, PhD candidate in transport engineering at KTU.

KTU conducts 21 scientific and artistic doctoral studies, where it is possible to obtain a doctoral diploma together with a European Ph.D. (Doctor Europaeus) certificate, and doctoral students in 10 fields of science can obtain a double degree of doctor of science at KTU and foreign research and study institutions. This year, doctoral studies in mathematics are being launched at KTU together with the globally recognized Charles and Georg August Göttingen Universities in Prague – a particularly important addition to the study portfolio of this degree.

The new doctoral course will examine various areas of mathematics: differential equations, financial mathematics, modeling of biomedical systems.

Individuals with a master’s degree or an equivalent qualification can apply for doctoral studies.

Students who want to study a master’s degree at KTU, but do not meet the minimum admission requirements, are invited to choose additional studies. They will pave the way for the opportunity to obtain the desired scientific degree. Upon completion of these studies, which usually last at least one semester, a certificate is issued, giving the right to enroll in the desired master’s study program. The full list of additional studies offered at the university is here.

Also, on May 2nd, applications are expected from students who wish to study professional pedagogy studies at KTU, return to a higher course after a break, drop out of studies, switch to another study program or obtain a university bachelor’s degree after completing college studies, and for an appropriate fee, study selected modules as a listener status.

Graduates with a bachelor’s degree are admitted to professional pedagogic studies, and the duration of studies is one year.
