The walls of the Vilnius Gaon yd History Museum (VGIM) are in memory of its long-time director, writer, translator Markos Zingeris (1947-2023): the museum gallery is named after him.

One year, April 20. Mark Zingeris will die. He headed VGIM for almost 15 years from 2005 to 2019, according to the museum’s announcement.

According to Simon Streltsov, director of VGIM, he was a person who connected Lithuanian and Jewish cultures:

He built bridges between Lithuanians and Lithuanians, paved the way for civil society. Don’t chase the bed, it was modest. For me, he will always be a public intellectual, which is rare nowadays. Mark was faithful to his truth, he taught with faith, he did not shy away from open discussion and criticism of society. From today, the museum spaces will remind Lithuanian and foreign visitors, the younger generation, of the personality of Markos Zingeris.

According to M. Zinger’s brother Emanuel, Mark’s creed in life was Laisvs alja in Kaunas, where they both grew up.

The echo of pre-war Lithuania, the history of the state, was heard in all his novels during those Soviet years. In a free alley, we raised our heads and looked up at the Nemunas uvulas, they reminded us that Lithuania has no borders, that the space of the uvula is free.

M. Zinger’s international exchanges in the VGIM museum for the scientific conference, the historical work of the museum became an important institution in the field of human rights and Holocaust research.

Painter Samuelis Bakas, an honorary citizen of Vilnius living in Boston, added in a video conference that it is difficult for him to understand that Marko was not among the gathering who was talking, talking, and mocking.

The museum has become a window of memory, the painful, tragic art of the past, and at the same time a wonderful testimony of how the new generations come to terms with it, get used to it. This is Marko’s merit, S. Bakas is quoted in the VGIM report.

M. Zingeris was born in 1947. January 2 in Prienai. in 1971 graduated in journalism from Vilnius University. 19711976 PhD in philosophy at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute and Kaunas Medical Institute.
