After the death of 114-year-old Venezuelan Juan Vincente Perez on April 3, the title of the oldest man on the planet went to 111-year-old Englishman John Alfred Tinniswood. Initially, it was reported that the 112-year-old Japanese Gisaburo Sonobe was to become the record holder, but it turned out that he died on March 31.

John Tinniswood was born on August 26, 1912, the same year that the Titanic sank. He was 111 years and 223 days old on April 5, 2024, when he officially received the title of oldest man. John lived through two world wars. He worked as an accountant all his life until he retired in 1972. During World War II, John served in an administrative role in the British military service, making him the world’s oldest World War II veteran.

John met his future wife Blodwen at a dance in Liverpool, and one of his favorite memories is their wedding in 1942. A year later, their only daughter Suzanne was born to the couple. The couple lived together for 44 years, until Blodven’s death in 1986. John has four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

John now lives in a care home in Southport and is described by staff as “a big chatterbox”. Despite his advanced age, John is still able to cope with most daily tasks on his own, such as getting out of bed and taking care of himself unaided. There are no signs of dementia in his husband – he is curious and lively, likes to communicate, listens to the radio every day to know what is going on, and manages his own finances.

According to John, he has never followed and does not follow any diets. On Fridays, he still eats a portion of his favorite dish, the traditional British fish and chips (fish in batter and fries). John does not smoke and rarely drinks alcohol. He believes that in order to preserve health, moderation is necessary everywhere: “If you drink too much or eat too much or walk , in short, if there is too much of something, you will inevitably suffer,” says the long-lived man. But when asked about the recipe for longevity, John says he’s “purely lucky.” “You can’t do anything about whether your life is long or short,” he notes philosophically.

The male longevity record is held by the Japanese Hiroemon Kimura, who died in 2013. aged 116 years and 54 days. And the oldest woman on the planet and generally the longest living person on Earth is the Spaniard Maria Branjas Morera, who recently celebrated her 117th birthday.
