In Jonava, a family raising a one-month-old baby noticed an unpleasant smell in the apartment. When the man started breathing hard and coughing, the family called the doctors. When they came to save the man, the doctors themselves were poisoned.

“There is a pungent smell of chemicals in the apartment. People felt sick and called the medics, when the medics arrived they also felt bad and called the firefighters. When we arrived, the medics and the injured apartment owners had already left to provide medical assistance,” said Saulius Kuliešius, head of Jonava’s fire rescue service.

Four adults and a newborn died. The adults did not need serious medical help, but the baby was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

“The parents were coughing, the little one-month-old baby started coughing. On suspicion of poisoning, he was brought to the children’s reception room. He was observed for four hours, the baby did not cough, no signs of poisoning were observed, he was released to a safe environment,” said Jolanta Gasienė, head of the Department of Children’s Diseases at Jonava Hospital.

Residents of the apartment building said that although they did not smell the smell in the stairwell, firefighters evacuated two floors.

“A person called to disinfect the apartment and the smell spread to the neighbors,” said the woman.

The entire LNK report is in the video:

A chemical rescue vehicle with special devices that capture chemical substances was called to Jonava.

“It didn’t show any deviations, since the smell was felt in that apartment, the thought arose that maybe someone was doing something on the other floors and the smell rose through the ventilation,” said S. Kuliešius.

It didn’t take long to find out who was being disinfected and by what.

“Insecticide is intended to kill insects or other unwanted creatures in residential premises,” said Jurgita Arbočienė, head of the Jonava department of the Public Health Center.

J. Arbočienė, when asked what she tried to destroy, answered: “The resident suspected that there might be bedbugs.”

The Public Health Center will check the company that performed the work, why the work was performed unsafely. The company that disinfected the apartment did not agree to comment on the situation on camera, but sent a written explanation.

“It is not yet clear exactly how the materials entered the other rooms, but it is likely that it happened through the ventilation hole, which must ensure individual ventilation of the rooms, since each apartment has its own separate duct. It is possible that one of the channels was blocked and the chemical could not be completely removed through the ventilation to the outside. Such a situation is unexpected and unpleasant for us and happened for the first time during our entire working period”, said Edgaras Baltrušaitis, the representative of “Sterilus” in a letter to LNK.

It is not yet clear exactly how the materials got into the other rooms, but it is likely that it happened through a ventilation hole.

Other specialists who have been working with pest control for decades said that all disinfectants are very dangerous for humans. It is not only important how the works will be carried out, but also that the residents themselves prepare the premises before such works.

“All possible ventilation openings with neighboring rooms had to be sealed, in order to be carried out effectively, the furniture had to be dismantled, removed, and then all surfaces cleaned,” explained Margarita Kutkaitė, director of “Dezinfos”.

According to pest exterminators, cases where people get poisoned after such disinfection, and not even one at a time, occur extremely rarely, once every few decades.
