On April 26, 27, 28, Juozas Miltinis Drama Theater will present the last premiere of this season – “Macbeth” (director Aleksandras Špilevoj). The performance will take place in the extraordinary space of the Panevėžys depot of the Aukštaitija narrow-gauge railway – the shortest and legendary tragedy of William Shakespeare has come to life there and will invite the audience to become witnesses of the bloody struggle for power.

Three fairies appear to Macbeth, a Scottish squire returning from a successful battle, and prophesy the king’s throne. Although the current King of Scotland, Duncan, is a powerful and respected ruler, and Macbeth stands far down the line of possible heirs, an unexpected prophecy takes hold of the warlord’s mind…

The desire for power, the pursuit of absolute power, the elimination of dissenters and the crushing of humanist principles are the main themes of William Shakespeare’s shortest and legendary tragedy. Unfortunately, they remain relevant even today, more than 400 years after the play was written.

What is the cost of the unbridled pursuit of power? To find an answer to this question, the creators of the play will invite the audience to the Aukštaitija narrow gauge railway depot. The performance, which will take place in an unconventional space, will eliminate the distinction between the audience and the actors and invite you to witness Macbeth’s bloody struggle for power, recognition and the throne.

According to the director of the play, Aleksander Špilevojaus: “The world would be much more beautiful if this play were no longer relevant today. But it is as it is. We cannot see what is happening around us, so we are sure that this performance is extremely timely. W. Shakespeare believed that blackness of boundless power is not invincible. I’m not that optimistic. But when I see evil, I cannot pretend that it does not exist, so I invite you to try to get to know it and give all your strength to resist it.”

Together with A. Špilevoj, the light artist Vilius Vilutis, composer Paulius Trijonis, set designer Gintarė Jonaitytė, costume designer Ugnė Tamuliūnaitė, choreographer Marius Pinigis are creating the performance. Cast: Mindaugas Ancevičius, Giedrius Arlauskas, Ieva Brikė, Marius Cemnickas, Tadas Gryn, Donatas Kalkauskas, Albinas Kėleris, Vytautas Kupšys, Rokas Pijus Misiūnas, Mantas Pauliukonis, Emilis Pavilionis, Urtė Povilauskaitė, Asta Preidytė, Laimutis Sėdius, Irena Sikorskytė, Jolita Skukauskaitė , Joris Zaliauskas, Gintautas Žiogas.
