From April citizens of Vilnius and guests of the capital will be able to use the public toilets belonging to the Vilnius City Municipality free of charge. The Vilnius City Council today approved the decision to cancel the previously valid 30 euro cent one-time tax. It is also planned to repair existing and build new public toilets in the next two years. It will be more convenient for residents and guests of the capital to find them – all places are marked and Google on the map.

Vilnius City Municipality currently owns 17 public toilets: 7 of them are automatic, 10 are sewered. An average of 28 thousand is collected for their use per year. Eur. According to representatives of the municipality, these funds cover only about 7.6 percent. operating and maintenance costs of toilets.

“Now residents and guests of the city will be more comfortable – more public toilets will appear, existing ones will be fixed.” We took into account residents’ comments about the inconvenient payment system – in some public toilets it was possible to pay only with cash, in newer ones – with bank cards. It was not convenient for the citizens, nor for us, the administrators of these funds, so we refused this tax,” said Gintautas Runovičius, head of the Urban Environment Department of the Vilnius City Municipality.

The 30-cent fee will remain only in the toilets integrated into the transport waiting pavilions, which were installed and administered by JCDecaux Lietuva UAB.

The municipality decided not to renew the contracts with the companies that previously maintained the public toilets. Since April of this year, the maintenance of public toilets has been entrusted to the company “Grinda” managed by the municipality. In the near future, the company plans to carry out cosmetic repairs of all public toilets managed by the Vilnius city municipality, and greater attention will be paid to the daily maintenance of toilets. In the next two years, it is planned to install automated cabin cleaning in sewered toilets – the toilet will be automatically flushed after each visit.

It is planned to expand the network of public toilets for the convenience of residents and city guests. It is planned to build 14 automatic public toilets in the next two years. They will be installed in Vingis Park, Valakupiai I and Valakupiai II beaches, near the Rasa cemetery, Polocko st., Odminiu st., Konstantinos Sirvydas, Lazdynai Pelėdas, Pelesas st. squares, Bazilijonai, Kaunas streets, at the Subačiaus street observation deck, Olandų street, Missionieri gardens.

Automatic public toilets will be open 24 hours a day, while others will be open according to scheduled working hours.
