The legendary Mercedes-Benz G series of cars, produced since 1979, also becomes electric. Although the car is already forty-five years old, through the latest EQ technologies, the legendary design is combined with modern strength, and the Gelandewagen is ready to prove that it has not lost its exceptional passing ability, enormous power reserve and reliable driving in all circumstances. 588 hp, 1164 Nm, four electric motors and zero CO2 and a range of 470 km on a single charge. Do these numbers suggest that this car is in its golden age?

Four electric motors (one for each wheel) ensure the unsurpassed mobility of the “Mercedes Benz G 580 EQ”. Both the front and rear axle designs each produce 108 kW (147 hp) of power and a maximum torque of 1164 Nm, always directed to the wheel that needs the most traction at the time.

In addition to four driving wheels and four electric motors, driving on the most difficult terrain is facilitated by the “Low Range” gearbox, which is suitable for both hauling loads and “kneading” off-road. Various electronic assistants help guide the machine through various hard-to-pass surfaces, reduce the turning radius and protect against dangerous swaying. Driving on unpredictable off-road will be facilitated by the “transparent hood” function, the image of the front of the car is shown to the driver on a virtual media screen. However, the passability of a real SUV will be most assured by the electric torque vectoring system, which replaced the mechanically locked differential and ensures much faster activation, allowing individual and automatic distribution of torque to each wheel separately.

The G-Class continues to be the champion of extreme cross-country ability thanks to thoughtful mechanical safety solutions. Protecting against wear and corrosion, the batteries are protected against dirt and water. The bottom and engine compartment are protected by a 26 mm thick carbon fiber protection plate that weighs only 57.6 kilograms and is fastened with 50 steel bolts. A corresponding steel guard would weigh three times as much.

Also, the EQ version of the G series can ascend and descend at a 45-degree (100 percent) slope and submerge in 850 millimeters of water. The tread depth is even 150 millimeters greater than that of the previous generation G series cars with internal combustion engines. The geometric data of the passability are also impressive. The ground clearance is at least 250 millimeters, the maximum permissible slope is 35 degrees, the approach angle is 32, the departure angle is 30.7 and the crossing angle (ramp) is 20.3 degrees.

The capacity of the G-series lithium-ion battery is 116 kWh, and the charged SUV can travel as much as 473 kilometers (according to WLTP). The maximum power of fast charging is 200 kW and when charging in this way, the battery is charged from 10 to 80 percent in 32 minutes. The latest EQ system batteries have three charging programs (Standard, Work and Home) and even five levels of energy regeneration (DAuto, D+, D, D– and D– –). In this way, Mercedes-Benz strives for a balance between optimal charging speed and the longest possible battery life.

The G Series’ electronic standard equipment list is also impressive. MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch screen, Multibeam LED headlights, Distronic distance control, active driving, emergency braking and lane control, blind spot warning, vigilance control and other electronic assistants. Parking will be assisted by 360-degree video cameras, and the safety of the driver and passengers will be taken care of by the branded Mercedes-Benz “Pre-Safe” security system. Economical driving will be helped by the ECO Assist system, which analyzes route navigation data, calculates the ideal driving speed, reduces costs and maximizes energy recovery.

For 45 years, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class model of military origin has been synonymous with comfortable off-roading. Subtle electrification allows you to continue enjoying the exceptional handling characteristics of the car without losing the comfort of everyday driving. The aristocrat with rubber boots has adapted to the new world and is ready to serve for many years to come for those who want to pass where it is very difficult to pass without losing style and elegance. In Lithuania, the electrified legend can already be ordered from 152 thousand. euros.
