“Currently, Russia supports its military efforts mainly from stockpiles, rather than large-scale production of new vehicles and certain types of weapons,” analysts at the US Institute for Military Studies wrote in their latest report.

Analysts at the institute cited a publication by the publication “Newsweek”, which claims that satellite images show that Russian warehouse stocks have significantly decreased. Compared to the level before the war, they decreased by almost 32 percent. – from 15,152 in 2021 up to 10,389 in 2024 in May.

“Approximately half of the artillery systems remaining at this base are likely unserviceable due to improper storage and the fact that many are World War II-era artillery systems incompatible with modern ammunition,” the report said.

ISW explained that Russia is relying on huge stockpiles of Soviet-era equipment and other equipment to support operations and losses in Ukraine at a level that far exceeds the capabilities of Russia’s current defense fund.

“Russia will probably try to properly equip its units with material means in the long term without moving the Russian economy into a war economy – it will not take a step that Russian President Vladimir Putin has tried to avoid so far,” emphasized American analysts.

Russia commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Hitler’s Germany in 1945 on Thursday with a traditional military Victory Day parade in Red Square.

This is the third such parade since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. In many regions of Russia, parades commemorating the victory in World War II have been canceled due to security concerns.

09:34 | Chairman of the NATO Military Committee: “It is not too late for Ukraine to win”, but with one condition

Admiral Rob Bauer, the chairman of NATO’s military committee, has no doubts that despite the partial breakthrough of Russian forces, Ukraine still has a chance to win the war if it gets enough Western support.

“It is not too late for Ukraine. The Russians have made progress, but it is still quite limited and still not strategic,” R. Bauer said in an interview with Dutch broadcaster VRT.

The admiral emphasized that the lack of Western aid has consequences on the Ukrainian front.

“The most important thing is that we continue to send help. And the longer the war drags on, the harder it is to do. Many countries have been supplying weapons and ammunition from their stockpiles for two years now, but they are not infinite either,” explained R. Bauer.

According to him, the West can do two things: “dig” its reserves even deeper and insist more strictly on increasing the production volumes of the defense industry.

“It will probably take at least a year to really ramp up production in the West.” We will have to overcome this period so that Ukraine can prepare for the next counterattack. However, it will not be easy,” the highest-ranking NATO admiral hinted.

He reported that about 450,000 Russian troops are currently concentrated in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

In addition, R. Bauer advised residents of Western countries to take care of radio receivers, battery-powered flashlights and water. He explained that in the event of war, there would be problems with electricity and water supply.

“This does not mean that the war will start tomorrow. But the next 15 years will be very turbulent as these tectonic power plates shift around the world. I think it’s important that people start to understand that this is not a fictional show,” the admiral added.
