A man believed to be armed with a sword drove his car into a house before striking several people with the sword, police said. The 36-year-old is said to have attacked members of the public and two police officers before he was eventually arrested.

The incident was reported to the Metropolitan Police just before 7am this morning. (9 a.m. Lithuanian time).

The condition of the injured is not known at this time, and officers are not looking for more suspects. Hainault metro station in Ilford was closed by police following the incident.

Ilford North MP Wes Streeting wrote on X: “A critical incident has been reported at Hainault station. The station and roads are closed. The police, ambulance and fire services are responding.”

Police said the attack did not appear to be terror-related.

Deputy Commissioner Ade Adelekan said after the incident: “This must have been a horrific incident for everyone involved. I know the whole community will be shocked and dismayed. People will want to know what happened and we will provide more information as soon as we can.”

The Metropolitan Police previously said: “Police are attending an incident in the Hainault area. Please follow the instructions of the police officers on site. One man was arrested.”
