Then a flow of hot air of tropical origin flowed from North Africa, which raised the air temperature in Southern and Eastern Lithuania to a record high. The highest air temperature record for April 29 and the entire month of April was recorded at the Alytus automatic meteorological station. The weather then heats up to 31 degrees. Such heat does not always occur even in summer. Until then, no meteorological station had crossed the symbolic +30 degree bar.
As you can see on the map, although we do not have a dominant single date with the highest (record) temperature at all meteorological stations, the end of April was very warm in 2000, 2012 and 2019. In addition, this year we recorded an unusual phenomenon, when particularly early, on April 9, as many as four meteorological stations achieved or repeated the records for the entire month of April.
As the average air temperature in April increases, so does the number of days when at least one meteorological station records +20 or more degrees. 1961-1990 period, there were only 2-3 such days in April, and in 1991-2020 the number of warm days doubled to 5 days. In 2000, 2014 and 2018 there were as many as 11-14 such warm days. Moreover, there are hardly any April months these days that do not have at least a few days with ≥20 °C.
