The death of Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, could trigger a fierce battle in the republic over who will lead the region. The fight may turn into an armed confrontation. If this scenario plays out, Russian President Vladimir Putin will have to send troops to Chechnya. The Sunday Times writes about it.

The article says that Kadyrov may die soon – information is circulating about his fatal disease (announced that it is pancreatic necrosis). This physical condition of the head of Chechnya overshadows other more significant and fundamental problems of the Russian political system.

First of all, Moscow managed to maintain peace in Chechnya for a long time only by bribing the local elite and carrying out brutal repression. A considerable amount of money from the federal budget was spent on the maintenance of Ramzan Kadyrov’s family and his close relatives. And the different armed groups in Chechnya swore loyalty to Kadyrov, but never trusted each other.

However, according to The Sunday Times, The leader of Chechnya never succeeded in creating a dynasty and taking power in the region. Especially since his eldest son Achmat has just turned 18 and cannot lead the republic. Therefore, now the main candidate to replace Kadyrov is the commander of the Achmat detachment, Major General Apty Alaudinov.

“Moscow looks at him as a person with whom it is possible to conduct business, but there are other relatives of R. Kadyrov who may think that they have greater claims to this position. For example, Kadyrov’s cousin Adam Delimkhanov is a former representative of Chechnya in the State Duma and has his own armed forces,” the article reads.

The Sunday Times emphasized that attempts to identify a new leader could provoke a split in Chechnya’s elite and armed confrontation.
