Red Bull had the best season in team history last year, winning 21 out of 22 races. Nevertheless, in the winter, the champions decided to change their car quite drastically. Red Bull has changed its concept and, at least for now, continues to win.
Still, the bold move to make some pretty drastic changes surprised many in the motorsport world. Koji Watanabe, president of the Honda concern, which supplies engines to Red Bull, spoke about the fact that the changes were really unexpected.
“Last year we won all but one race together. But they still changed the concept and it’s incredible! They made many requests to adapt our engine to the new concept. When we saw this season’s car in reality, we were very surprised by all the changes made.
Of course, we cannot increase the power from our side, but we can adapt the engine to the new machine. In addition, we can improve the reliability of the engine. That’s exactly what we did last winter. Last year we had a little more risks, so we wanted to make the engine even more reliable and we did that,” said K. Watanabe.
