“Due to extremely high voter turnout, queues of voters who want to vote are stretched out even after 8 p.m. in some polling stations. In such cases, the election commission records the end of the queue and all voters who arrived in the queue before 8 p.m. are allowed to vote,” reads the statement issued by the Central Election Commission.

According to CEC data, during the three days of early voting, residents of Neringa municipality voted most actively. Their turnout exceeded 29 percent. Active voting also took place in Birštoni (15.5%), Ignalina (12.5%) and Varėna (12.1%), Palanga city (11.7%), Lazdijai (11%) and Kupiškis districts. (10.3 percent).

At that time, the voters of Šalčininkų district, Kaunas district, Vilnius district, Klaipėda city and Kretinga, Šiauliai and Panevėžys districts remained the most passive. Voter turnout in these municipalities is still less than 5 percent.

ELTA reminds that early voting in the presidential elections and the referendum on the preservation of citizenship ended on Thursday. Voters could vote in all 60 municipalities until 8 p.m., regardless of where they declared their place of residence.

Election commissions will visit voters at home on Friday and Saturday. Disabled people, people who care for disabled people at home, people who are unable to work due to illness and voters aged 70 and over can vote at home.

The main election day is Sunday. Voters will be able to vote in any polling station – a total of 1,895 locations throughout Lithuania.

8 candidates are competing for the post of the head of the country – Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė nominated by the conservatives, representative of the Freedom Party, former chairman of the Constitutional Court (KT) Dainius Žalimas, independent candidates Ignas Vėgėlė and Eduardas Vaitkus, founder of the “Nemunos aušra” party Remigijus Žemaitaitis , Giedrimas Jeglinskas of the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” and Chairman of the Labor Party Andrius Mazuronis.

In the referendum ballot, it is proposed to abandon the sentence currently included in the Constitution: “except for individual cases provided for by law, no one can be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and another state at the same time”. This provision does not allow the preservation of Lithuanian citizenship after acquiring the citizenship of another state.
