After the government of Kretinga did not approve the plans of the Danish renewable energy company European Energy to build an oil fuel factory in the area, the company suspended the environmental impact assessment (EIA) in the village of Auksdi in Darbn Senenia.

However, the representatives of the company assure that the factory, which is planned to be invested 400 mln. Eur, suitable location searches and evaluations, and due to the investment, the final decision will be made next year.

We stopped the EIA procedures in the Kretinga district in view of the decision of the (district BNS) council regarding the disapproval of the planned activity, Tadeuas Konkovskis, head of the European Energy office in Lithuania, said in a comment to the BNS.

And the fact that at the end of March, 22 members of the district council voted, one abstained, and there was no one who voted in the village of Auksdi, located in the village of Auksdi, near the resort of Palanga, or the e.methanol and hydrogen industry.

The company has also started the EIA procedure of the planned project in Akmens district. Therefore, according to the representative of European Energy, the company is interested in and evaluates more possible locations for the construction of the factory.

The evaluation of suitable locations for the factory has not been completed, and final decisions regarding the construction of the factory in Lithuania and the choice of location will be made in the coming years, when all evaluations will be completed, said T. Konkovskis.

He emphasized that the final decision regarding the investment of fuel plants in Lithuania has not yet been made: But we believe that the market can be attractive for such activities, so we started looking for a suitable place for the plant earlier.

European Energy announced its intention to invest about 400 million Eur e.methanol and oily hydrogen factories in Lithuania have so far chosen locations in Kretinga and Akmens districts. It is expected to be finally selected in 2025, and to start operations in 2028. According to the company, this is the most powerful such factory in the Baltic and Scandinavian countries.

The factory will create several dozen new jobs, and the infrastructure of that area and the surrounding area will also be managed during its construction.

However, the communities of Kretinga and Akmens districts, which had been a potential location for a new factory until now, were afraid of the future project and its potential impact on the environment and health.

Kretinga district mayor Antanas Kalnius told BNS earlier that the council’s disapproval of the construction of the factory was due to the fact that investors and central government institutions did not communicate with local residents or the district municipality.

In addition, according to him, the situation was complicated by the national threat reports of the State Security Department (VSD), the participation of individuals in meetings of the residents of the district and in protests directed at the construction of the factory, as well as the attention of a propaganda channel controlled by Russia.

European Energy is developing the world’s first large-scale e-methanol plant in Denmark, which should start operating next year. The plant’s output will be used as fuel for the world’s first CO2-neutral cargo ship, the Laura Maersk.
