Vilnius Airport announces that it has been canceled today at 10:25 p.m. Ryanair flight from the capital of Lithuania to Paris.

According to the company’s announcement, the flights are being canceled due to France’s alleged failure to protect flights during national air traffic strikes.

Although the French air traffic controllers’ union is on strike, most of the disrupted passengers are not flying to and/or from France, but are flying over French airspace en route to their destination (eg UK – Greece, Spain, Italy).

The Irish company complains that French law unfairly protects domestic flights, meaning French flights are protected but non-French flights are cancelled.

“French air traffic controllers are free to strike, that’s their right, but we should be canceling French flights, not Ireland to Italy or Germany to Spain or the Scandinavian countries to Portugal.”

The European Commission, under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen, has not taken any action in five years to protect flights over airports and the single air transport market. We call again on it to take action to protect flights over airports that would eliminate more than 90% of of these canceled flights,” Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary was quoted as saying in the statement.

He reminds that the European Parliament elections will be held in June and urges everyone to vote to demand that members of the European Parliament and the European Commission take action to protect flights over airports.

“We cannot allow the skies over Europe to be permanently closed because French air traffic controllers are on strike.

Protect airspace during national air traffic controller strikes, reduce the number of canceled and disrupted flights and give all European citizens and visitors a better summer,” urges Michael O’Leary.
