As the business is asking to agree on the allocation of 4% of oil gross domestic product (GDP) to oil defense, Prime Minister Ingrida Imonyt says that she misses naming the source of such financing in this initiative.

I’m very glad that people care, I’m very glad that people understand that defense costs money, but what I don’t see in this debate is a very timely declaration that we not only need to allocate more money to defense, but we are also ready to teach it more, Thursday radio say I. imonyt.

She reiterated that the state has nothing else to do except pay the money.

The teachers who pay this then still have to make their decision known in some way, whether they accept lower social welfare in other areas, or whether they still agree to pay higher taxes so that other areas are not affected, but defense is also financed more, said the Prime Minister.

I. imonyt stated that first of all, they would like to agree on defense financing aimed at at least 3% of GDP.

The Prime Minister hopes that representatives of the opposition will also participate in discussions about this.

As far as I can see, everyone is very much in favor of increasing funding up to 4%, although we have not yet agreed on 3%. This gives me hope that maybe after all, after the emotions subside a little, we will be able to join a constructive discussion, especially after our Trials Council and civil society partners finish their discussions, said I. imonyt.

In order to encourage the public and politicians to agree on defense funding aimed at 4% of GDP, some business associations and organizations announced on Monday that they are joining the 4 percent initiative.

The 4 percent campaign was initiated by the Lithuanian Business Confederation (LVK), the startup association Unicorns Lithuania and the Confederation of Lithuanian Industrialists.

The authors of the initiative also invite residents to sign a petition and thus urge politicians to agree on 4% of GDP funding for defense as soon as possible. Paraus, together with the petition, is planned to be handed over to the President, the Seimas and the Government during the spring session of the Parliament.

Responding to the prime minister’s statements, Andrius Romanovskis, president of LVK, states in a stand-up comment that businesses and organizations supporting the 4 percent initiative agree to pay higher taxes in order to allocate more l to oil defense.

This is our principled position, business wants to contribute to the defense of the country by paying more, because a safe Lithuania is our common interest as a businessman in the regions, a teacher, an employee, a pensioner, an industrialist, a start-up group or a member of the Seimas. The means of increasing the defense funding, the business will present many and many, and part of it is revealed in the specific defense funding proposals formed by the Government. Therefore, we also invite you to be ambitious and go further than the current discussions, noted A. Romanovskis.

According to him, over 30,000 Lithuanian residents have signed the petition urging politicians to agree on 4% of GDP funding for defense as soon as possible.

In order to increase the fixed financing of search protection from 2.5% to 3% of GDP, the Ministry of Finance prepared and presented four alternatives to the partners of the ruling coalition, business and professional representatives, how to collect additional income for the state budget.

Politicians and social partners will discuss these decisions in the next few weeks, and the Government hopes to announce specific decisions in mid-April.
