The wording was evaluated by the voters

On Sunday, not only the presidential election will take place, but also a referendum on the preservation of citizenship. For it to happen, at least 1,216,469 must mark the answer “YES” on the ballot. LNK asked the voters if they understood the wording of the ballot and if those electing the president also vote in the referendum?

Vilnius residents interviewed by LNK testified that the question on the referendum ballot is extremely difficult.

“It should have been worded differently, but it is clear that we will vote this way. It was necessary to formulate it more clearly for people, because there is legal language, maybe people find it too complicated,” he said.

Another voter said she didn’t even care what wording was on the ballot because she knows how to vote.

But there were also people who were happy to see this wording for the first time outside of the voting booth. Here is one woman who admitted that otherwise she would have had to think carefully about how to vote.

“But since such an explanation has spread on social networks, I am ready now,” said the girl.

A man waiting in line at the early voting station in Lukiškiau Square said that he understood the wording and was preparing to vote “against”.

“A citizen is a citizen, he must belong to a specific state. Why is he wandering around the world? I don’t know, I’m still considering it, but I’ll make a decision right before the vote,” said the man.

Another voter said that the wording on the referendum is too long, too unclear.

“And that confuses people. But I read it twice and it was clear,” she said.

What are the actions if the referendum takes place?

The Chairman of the Bar Council, Mindaugas Kukaitis, agreed in the program “Labas vakaras, Lietuva” that the ballot does not include the question “are you for or against dual citizenship”.

“You will find the entire new wording of Article 12 of the Constitution, which repeals the second part. She said that a person cannot have Lithuanian and other citizenships, unless there are exceptions and separate cases.

This clause is deleted. And the question of granting multiple citizenship is passed to the Seimas for a decision,” said M. Kukaitis.

And the Seimas will need a Constitutional majority – 85 votes of parliamentarians – said M. Kukaitis, chairman of the Bar Council.

He reiterated once again that after the referendum, the issue and discussions about it will move to the Seimas, where the final decision will be made.

“If the Seimas passes a special law, the majority of 85 parliamentarians will have to decide on what grounds to grant the citizenships of which countries to the persons. This is a question of the future”, M. Kukaitis said in the program “Labas vakaras, Lietuva”.
