On Thursday, after the presentation, the Seimas approved the amendments to the law, providing for the possibility of calling more reserve soldiers to the exercises. These amendments are important for the commandantry system being developed by the Ministry of National Defense (KAM).

51 members of the Seimas voted for these amendments to the law, 12 abstained, and there were no votes against.

“The ready reserve by law cannot now be called up for any military exercises, it just doesn’t exist. Now we are reviewing all of this and the purpose of the amendments is to allow the prepared reserve to be called,” L. Kasciūnas told Elta.

It is proposed that the unprepared reserve, ie residents of Lithuania registering for the commandant’s offices, could also be called to the exercises. Curfew exercises are expected to take place between 3 and 10 days per year.

It is also suggested that a person who has served in the commandant’s office for 9 years should acquire military training.

“This is by no means an alternative to conscription, but it is an opportunity to gain military readiness and become a member of the military reserve,” he said.

Commandant units in peacetime will be filled with soldiers of professional military service, assigned conscripts of the prepared reserve, commandant riflemen of the Lithuanian Rifle Association and civilians. In peacetime, their military training will be ensured by the National Defense Volunteer Forces (KASP).

KAM notes that all patriotic citizens can sign up for commandant offices. People of all specialties and education who want to prepare for national defense and acquire basic military knowledge and skills are welcome at the commandant’s offices.

Registration for commandant offices will continue until August 31. It is planned that military training will begin in the military units of the military commandantships already in October.
