Vaccines that protect against a severe form of COVID-19, prolonged symptoms or death from this infection have been linked to a small increase in neurological, blood and heart diseases, Bloomberg news agency reports.

One of the phenomena identified early in the pandemic included the risk of heart-related inflammation from injections made by Pfizer Inc., BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc., according to the world’s largest vaccine safety study to date. And an injection made by AstraZeneca Plc. has been linked to an increased risk of blood clots in the brain.

The study involved 99,068,901 vaccinated people from eight countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, New Zealand and Scotland.

According to The Hill, researchers discovered thirteen side effects that occurred 42 days after the vaccine. These include Guillain-Barré syndrome, Bell’s palsy, seizures, myocarditis and pericarditis.

The analysis showed that after the second dose of the Moderna vaccine, there was a higher risk of an inflammation of the heart called myocarditis. Although the cases of myocarditis caused by the COVID-19 vaccine were mostly mild, 28 deaths were also recorded.

The researchers found a significant increase in the incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome among those who received the AstraZeneca vaccine. Those who received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine also saw a higher-than-expected incidence of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

According to The Hill, both mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna have been linked to myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, that occurred more often than expected. Significantly higher incidences of pericarditis were also observed after the first and fourth doses of Moderna vaccine.

“When evaluating the overall risk-benefit ratio of vaccination, the risk associated with infection should be taken into account, as several studies have shown a higher risk of developing study events such as GBS, myocarditis or ADEM after SARS-CoV-2 infection than after vaccination,” emphasized scientists.
