A resident of the city of Alytus is accused of illegal possession of excise goods.

According to the case data, in 2021 in August, a man from Alysti was caught transporting “Minsk Super Slim” cigarettes marked with the stamps of the Republic of Belarus. It is suspected that the man and his accomplices tried to transport boxes with almost 12.5 thousand items thrown across the Lithuanian-Belarus state border. packs of cigarettes. The value of the goods reached almost 44 thousand. euros.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the investigators of the Pre-trial Investigation Department of the Varėna Border Squad of the State Border Guard Service.

The 35-year-old accused was detained, but was released a day later after giving him a written promise not to leave. In order to avoid responsibility for the crime he committed, the man from Aly fled abroad, but he was detained in Hungary for the illegal transportation of migrants.

By the decision of the Budapest court, the man from Alyty was ordered to be arrested, and according to the issued European arrest warrant, he was returned to the Lithuanian law enforcement officers after almost three years of hiding. The court allowed the arrest of the accused.

He has already been convicted 7 times for light and serious crimes: robberies, thefts and minor health impairment. He has been fined several times for administrative law violations.

During the court proceedings, the aim will be to award the Lithuanian state the costs of bringing the man to the Republic of Lithuania – almost 3 thousand. euros.

The criminal case was transferred to the Varėna Chamber of the Alytus District Court.
