Preparations are underway to announce a design competition for the adaptation of the building complex of the Klaipėda Central Post Station on Liepų Street to the activities of the Astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander Science and Art Center. It is true that the buildings would be reborn soon.

Last week, the Culture Infrastructure Center announced a market consultation, during which the aim will be to find out how to better organize public procurement for the design of the building complex. The consultation is expected to take place on May 13.

The head of the center, Šarūnas Šoblinskas, says that only after that, a tender will be announced to select the designer.

“Later – public procurement and we will look for designers. The post office will need to be restored and adapted to the activities of the Argelander center,” said Š. Shoblinsk.

According to him, it is expected that the complex of buildings will be adapted for a new purpose within four years: “We are aiming for the year 2028.”

The buildings on Liepų Street remained empty in 2019, when Lithuanian Post, which operated here, moved from them to new premises. The feasibility study of the complex, prepared by the Ministry of Culture, envisages that it is possible to establish the FW Angelander Art and Science Center in them, which would have a communication museum, a symbolic post office, an astronomer’s museum, multi-purpose halls, educational and collaboration spaces and other premises that would perform not only public functions, but and would provide an opportunity for commercial activities and generate income.

Astronomer, pioneer of the systematic application of variable star observation in astronomy, FW Angelanderis was born in Klaipėda, he worked in several countries and is the first scientist from the port city to become famous in the world.

He lived in this building that belonged to his family, on which a commemorative plaque dedicated to the astronomer was unveiled in 1993.

It is believed that investments in the creation of such a center would amount to more than 5 million. euros. According to the assessment of the assets carried out in 2021, the central post office is valued at more than 1.5 million. euros.
