The National Museum of Lithuania contributes to the May 18 Museum Nights and invites you to free events in their departments. Visitors can expect a festival of nature and culture, a modern and interactive presentation of history and inspiring art tours. When the clock strikes 6 p.m., the museum will invite everyone to visit the branches in Vilnius, Ozkabalai, Palanga and Kudirka Naumiestis for free.

Oak Festival of Lithuanian National Revival

The birthplace of Jonas Basanavičiaus will invite you to an impressive celebration of nature and culture in Ožkabalii – the 35th birthday of the Lithuanian national revival oak grove. In 1989, an initiative group of seven people gathered together and invited people from all corners of Lithuania to plant an oak grove of Lithuanian national revival. During the three weekends of April, with the occasional drizzle, about 3,500 people gathered in taluks with tricolors in their hands and planted over 7,000 trees, a green symbol of Lithuania’s freedom.

The free one-day festival from 1 to 11 p.m. oh all Goats. The evening will be crowned with a mystical night excursion in Ėuolyne. The event will be hosted by Domantas Bugailiškis.

Archeology and history – modern and interactive

Archeological research on Gediminas Hill, which lasted for several years, yielded extremely significant results – 1863-1864 were found here. the remains of the commanders and participants of the uprising. Why were the remains of these people buried in the very center of the city? What was special about Gediminas Castle and the area around it during that period? Gediminas Castle Tower from 18:00 to 22:00. will invite you to tours, during which you will be the first to see the updated exposition dedicated to the twenty rebels found here, authentic items that belonged to them, various iconographic materials.

Museum night is a great opportunity to get to know Pilininka’s House, the newest branch of the Lithuanian National Museum, opened this year at the foot of Mount Gediminas. Visitors are welcome on tours of the museum exhibition “Understanding Lithuania”, which will take place at 8 and 9 p.m. During the excursions, you will get to know the fundamental ideas that shaped the identity of Lithuania. The old arsenal in Vilnius will invite you to get to know the culture of one of our predecessors – the Curonian tribe. One of the exhibits in the exhibition “Subtle blue: what did the glass eyes see?” presents a unique massive pin with a cross head found in a woman’s grave in the Palanga cemetery with a band of attached compound quotation marks. When you visit the exhibition coming from the Jonas Šliūpas Museum, you will learn more about the position of the Curonian woman in society and you will be able to try the weight of a replica of this exceptional item and wear a cloak fastened with it.

Can history be touched? The bastion of the Vilnius defensive wall says: yes! Late on Saturday evening, from 18:00 to 23:00, as many as five exhibits will speak in the dungeons of Bastet. They have acquired a new form – tactile copies made using 3D technologies have preserved the most important details of the exhibits, and audio narrations reveal the secrets of things and past centuries. You will learn about the interesting facts of the new story by becoming detectives in the House of Signatories in Vilnius. Today, we would probably be surprised to see a full-length photo and the entry “grey hair” in our passports. Maybe we wouldn’t even realize that it’s a passport? House of signatories from 18:00 to 23:00. will invite visitors to immerse themselves in an interactive detective game. You will look for passports of different periods, study stamps, symbols, clichés used in documents. The culmination of the game is the creation of a symbolic souvenir, so no one will leave empty-handed. The game requires a smartphone.

Vilnius residents will be able to get to know the new history more deeply in the House of Stories and in the Former Detention Center. The House of Stories will invite you to visit this year’s biggest exhibition of the Lithuanian National Museum, “Lithuania the size of the world: the history of our migration” and immerse yourself in the intriguing world of conspiracy theories in the exhibition “Believe it or not: conspiracy theories”. Meanwhile, the recently reopened Former Detention Center will attract visitors to the “Trap with central heating” – a renewed and expanded exhibition about life in Lithuania between 1965 and 1993, which was already loved by residents and guests of the capital last year.

Cosmic and sensory art journeys

Jonas Šliūpas Museum in Palanga from 19:00 to 23:00. will invite you to embark on a cosmic odyssey of identity and form at the optical art exhibition “Kazio Varnelis’s work: identity and form”. What connects painter Kazi Varnelis and director Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001 A Space Odyssey” and director Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie”? With the music of the composer Richard Strauss playing, visitors will get to know Kazis Varnelis’ endlessly inspiring work and meet the inhabitants of the cosmos – beings of expressive forms without identity. The mood will be created by cosmic beings Marta Vendland, Ana Gucol, Daiva Fedenko, Alvyda Toleikienė, Jurgita Hiršienė from the ARTYN theater (Klaipėda) (director Marta Vendland, costume designer Aušra Pacevičiūtė).

Explorers of the capital will be able to get acquainted with the works of the master of optical art in the house-museum of Kazis Varnelis, but this museum will surprise you not only with that. 8:30 p.m. here you can spend an evening with the most beautiful books and the artist, book painter, designer of the creative studio “Bookland” Siguta Chlebinskaite. This is a great opportunity to get to know the fashions and trends of book publishing: flip through the winners of book art competitions, feel the paper texture of bibliophile publications, explore their exclusive design, which has won not only national, but also international recognition – the books on display here have been nominated for this year’s World Book Art Competition and Bologna Children’s Books at the fair.

9 p.m. Visitors to the Kazios Varnelis House-Museum are also invited to an excursion with the young generation painter Monika Radžiūnaite to the intriguing exhibition of her works “And I’m Only Human”. Together with the author, you will be able to explore the exhibition full of irony and provocative games and think about what image, which has always been a faithful servant of religions, could complement the sacred texts today? And what new religion would be born from today’s visual culture?

A performance that became a historical event

in 1998 The community of Kudirkas Naumiestis was mobilized and united by the performance of the same name based on the play by Kazios Inčiūras “Vincas Kudirka”, which was attended by many citizens of Naumiestis. It was the city’s cultural event that spread throughout the neighborhood. Vincos Kudirka Museum in Kudirka Naumieści at 6 p.m. will invite you to watch the recording of this historic performance. The director of the performance is Natalija Manikienė, the makeup artist is Marija Oržekauskaitė. The main roles were created by Vincos Kudirkos – Vygintas Kuras, Valerijos – Julija Sederevičienė, Petro Kriaučiūnos – Algimantas Damijonaitis and others.
