When the curfew is introduced, it should not affect the population, says Major Donatas Suchockis, an officer of the Defense Staff.

However, he notes that checkpoints will be set up during the curfew, where drivers or pedestrians may be stopped by soldiers or police officers and asked to provide personal documents.

“Where there will be checkpoints with police officers, a procedure will be carried out that is very similar to normal traffic police raids, when all vehicles on the road are stopped, pedestrians may be stopped, but only for the purpose of checking documents, maybe in exceptional cases to check the contents of the car, but the direction of movement will not be changed for residents in any way and they will be able to move on as after a normal police raid, after showing their documents”, said D. Suchockis to LRT radio on Tuesday morning.

“We model the exercises in such a way that there is as little intervention as possible in public life. That is why the hours from 22:00 to 05:00 have been chosen. In principle, these are quiet hours, when there is much less movement to work in general,” he added.

As previously announced, the exercises of the Lithuanian army and NATO allies are taking place in the capital and Kaunas on May 6-8. During the exercise, the readiness of institutions, bodies and organizations to carry out mobilization and the tasks of receiving allies, requisitioning of property and the announcement of a curfew are checked.

According to the commander of the army, Valdemars Rupšis, a total of more than 20 thousand soldiers will train in Lithuania. national and allied troops.

2.5 thousand people were called to participate in the exercise. active reserve soldiers, several thousand more invited for a short background check procedure. The commandant system will also be tested during the exercise.

ELTA reminds that NATO started the largest military exercise since the Cold War in January of this year. As previously announced, the exercises are designed to simulate NATO’s response to an attack by a rival such as Russia. They will involve 50 ships, 80 aircraft and more than 1,100 combat vehicles. The military maneuvers are being carried out as NATO reorganizes its defenses following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
