Food waste is already being sorted in Neringa

--

In the first week of May, residents of Neringa and guests of the resort noticed sliding containers with brown lids standing at waste collection points. These containers are intended for sorting food waste. As in Klaipėda, food waste will be randomly sorted into plastic bags of any color and thrown into brown containers after being tied tightly.

According to the procedure approved by Neringa municipality, 30 containers for food waste will be in permanent places throughout the year, and during the summer season, when the resorts are flooded with the highest flow of vacationers, another ten containers will be temporarily placed in the most visited places in Neringa.

Residents of Neringa will not be given kitchen buckets or bags, as is done in other municipalities of the country. Food waste is suggested to be thrown in plastic bags of any color that you have purchased.

The sorting procedure in the homes of people from Neringiški will be identical to the way municipal waste is sorted now: residents or holidaymakers who put a plastic bag in their container in the kitchen will collect leftover food, and the collected bag will need to be tied tightly and thrown into the nearest public use container with a brown lid.

According to specialists, if a tightly tied plastic bag is thrown into the outdoor container, food waste does not contaminate the container and thus reduces the possibility of unpleasant odors. For the same reason, it is not recommended to use paper bags for sorting food waste. Because they tear when they get wet and food waste spreads around the container.

In Neringa, the food waste collected from residents will be transported to the mainland for processing – there is a food waste processing workshop near the Dumpiai regional landfill, where food waste collected throughout the Klaipėda region is re-sorted and prepared for processing. Biomass prepared from food scraps is transported in tanks to composting plants, where it becomes raw material for biomethane and fertile compost.
