It is becoming less and less common for employees to indicate their age in their CV – is it possible and what kind of people do it

Age is not a barrier

Dainius Adamavičius, head of the BTA Utena regional department, says that the average age of the employees in his department is 53, and most of them are even older.

“I am proud of my team for its friendliness, collegiality and mutual communication. New employees really get help from seniors,” D. Adamavičius said on the “Delfi diena” program.

Toma Matutytė, who has many years of management experience, also saw the other side of the problem, that even older employees avoid applying for one or another job. And the reason for this is that they are afraid of disappointment.

“It seems to me that it is formed from past experiences in the past, when it was believed that if a person does one or the same job, he will do that for the rest of his life. There was no openness to change and stagnation prevailed,” the interviewee said.

T. Matutytė, who works in the field of aviation and manages the company, claims that she has not come across a company in the global labor market where only young people work. Lithuanian companies still miss older workers.

“We have to communicate with candidates who ask during the job interview why we invited him, because they say we can see how old he is. Age is definitely not an obstacle, first of all, skills, experience in certain jobs, and motivation to work are needed,” emphasized T. Matutytė.

She also noticed that an older person is more aware of what he wants and strives for in life.

“He has tried a lot of things, he is less in a hurry, it is more interesting for him to do a certain job where he already has experience. The motivation of such people is even higher than that of young people who are still very much searching for themselves”, said the interviewer.

Age is not required for CV

When D. Adamavičius was asked whether older people really tend to underestimate themselves in the labor market, he said that he follows a few simple principles when evaluating a future employee.

“A person who applies for one or another job position does not necessarily have to indicate his age in his CV. The most important thing for me is that we see the skills, experience and achievements of that employee,” said the interviewer of the show.

According to T. Matutytė, the age of a person is indicated in the CV less and less recently.

“I think that both the employee and the employer are starting to pay less attention to it. We are actually already forming other standards. People have seen more of the world, have a different imagination, so both employers and employees are inclined to change, although this still requires some time, initiatives, and support,” the interviewer emphasized.

D. Adamavičius emphasized that when creating his CV, a person should first of all emphasize how he can be useful in one or another job position and name his strengths.

“I would advise not to be afraid, to be motivated and dare to apply,” said the interviewer.

He was also supported by T. Matutytė, who believes that the most important thing is to know what you want to convey to a future employer in your CV. For example, if a person is applying for a position in the field of customer service, he should emphasize his qualities such as communication skills, willingness to communicate by phone, etc. According to the interlocutor, it is also important to detail the experience you already have, because it is one of the priorities for certain job positions.

Diversity of age ensures harmony

When D. Adamavičius was asked how the right attitude towards an older employee should be formed, he emphasized that the prevailing stereotypes should first be forgotten.

“We have to admit that aging is approaching and we will not escape from it anywhere,” the interviewer emphasized.

According to T. Matutytė, a “healthy” ecosystem is formed when there are employees of various ages in the team who help each other and communicate respectfully.

“Such collectives, which consist of people of various ages, are more permanent. They are like a family who naturally live and move forward together. Foreign companies even strive to maintain a stable age level that would ensure good team cohesion. Then, of course, people work more efficiently”, emphasized the interviewer.

According to T. Matutytė, older people in the team can show by example how to concentrate on work and wait for the result, and their loyalty to the company is stronger than that of young employees.

“When the environment is not very urgent, young people also learn to stop themselves. If no one is using their phones while dining in the kitchen, they help them too,” joked the interviewer of the show.
