The distribution of orange garbage bags and containers for food waste sorting continues in Vilnius. For the convenience of Vilnius residents, bags and special containers will be distributed in 14 Vilnius Lidl stores in May. Since the beginning of this year, after the new waste sorting procedure came into effect in the capital, the Vilnius County Waste Management Center urges residents to separate food waste that is no longer suitable for consumption.

After the new order came into force, residents of the capital are invited to collect food waste in special orange bags and throw them into mixed municipal waste containers. It is expected that new sorting habits will help to reduce the amount of waste in Vilnius.

“In order to make it more convenient for residents to pick up disposable orange bags and containers for sorting, we created the conditions for the Vilnius County Waste Management Center (VAATC) to distribute bags and buckets to more Lidl stores. From May 3 to 28 sorting tools will be available in 14 Lidl stores at the specified time”, says Monika Urbelytė, head of sustainability at Lidl Lietuva.

In case of running out of bags, it is possible to buy them in stores

Residents who already sort food waste and have used up the orange bags provided by VAATC can additionally purchase them at all Lidl stores. One roll contains 25 bags, the price of a roll is 0.99 EUR. All biodegradable waste can be thrown into special orange bags: food products that are no longer suitable for consumption, peels, skins, gnats, egg shells, tea and coffee grounds, indoor plants and their parts, paper towels, napkins or food supplements that are no longer suitable for consumption, etc.

The waste in the mixed municipal waste containers, packed in orange bags, goes to the mechanical biological treatment facilities, where the bags are sent for recycling, and the food waste – for composting.
