After announcing the possible plans of the German military industry giant Rheinmetall to build an ammunition factory on state-owned land owned by the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) located in the vicinity of the town of Baisogalas in the Radviliškis district, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė does not comment on the specific location of the plot, but says she hopes that the decisions on compensations to the university could be made public “within the next two weeks.”

“I won’t detail any plots and any solutions yet, but the discussions regarding the search for plots are ongoing and if this is the plot you have in mind, there are certainly possible solutions that (…) would not inconvenience the current user of the plot, and there are prepare”, I. Šimonytė told journalists at the Klaipėda cruise ship terminal.

“Details will be available when the decisions are made,” clarified the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister says she hopes this will be done “within the next two weeks”.

When asked about whether she will visit Baisogala, the Head of the Government assured that, if such a need arises, she will “try to visit everywhere”.

“I don’t want to discuss a specific plot now, but the news is that the investor needs a very large plot simply because of the specifics of the activity. And there are not so many of those large, ready plots. If someone has to give up the plot of land they are currently managing in order for the state to strengthen its security and defense industry, the state will certainly look for ways to solve this inconvenience,” she emphasized.

The Ministry of Economy and Innovation previously announced that the construction of the “Rheinmetall” ammunition factory in Lithuania is intended to begin in the fall of this year.

This month, Rheinmetall, together with the Minister of Economy and Innovation, Aušrina Armonaita, and the Minister of National Defense, Lauryns Kasčiūnas, signed a letter of intent regarding the construction of an ammunition factory in Lithuania.

This month, the Ministry also submitted to the Seimas amendments to the laws that create more favorable conditions for the development of large investment projects.

These changes would simplify the conditions for large-scale projects that are intended to meet the immediate needs of the state’s security and defense. This would facilitate the procedures related to territorial planning, land plot formation and construction.
