“It is clear that EU membership was the most important step during the entire period of restored independence. And in the political, economic or security context of today’s world, our success story, created over two decades, becomes even more valuable”, the head of the parliament asserts in a statement issued on Wednesday.

“We, who came from uniform totalitarianism, were most fascinated by freedom and diversity in Europe. For us, Europe has always been a space of prosperity and prosperity, created by different cultures, multilingual traditions,” she asserted.

According to V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, in the last couple of centuries, Lithuania experienced several long-term waves of aggression from the East that deliberately destroyed the European identity, but managed to recover and return to the united family of European states.

“Our statehood was formed in the border zone between East and West. Unity for us is not only a beautiful metaphor, but also an existential category. We are particularly sensitive to it. In our national anthem, “unity” is the key word, synonymous with statehood. In the face of today’s dire challenges, what Europe needs most is unity. Lithuania has a living experience of united action, which mobilized statehood and helped repel aggression. That’s why you can and must talk about it,” emphasized the Speaker of the Seimas.

Lithuania became a member of the EU on May 1, 2004, along with nine other Central and Eastern European countries.
