The Vilnius municipality plans to establish parking spaces specifically for electric scooters in other areas, not only in the city center districts.
Since the end of August last year, special parking spaces have been placed in four districts of the city: Old Town, part of Naujamiestis, Užupis and Šnipiškii.
“In the assessment of the municipality, the installation of specially marked parking spaces has been very successful: electric scooters have started to be parked much more neatly, residents can no longer leave them anywhere, so the traffic of pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles is not hindered. This season, it is planned to expand the project to other districts of the city,” municipality representative Gabrielius Grubinskas said in a comment to BNS this week.
The municipality intends to announce the districts of Vilnius where special parking spaces for electric scooters will be available in May.
At that time, from June 2023, electric scooters and bicycles will be prohibited from driving on Vilnius, Pilies and Savičius streets.
G. Grubinskas indicated that for now the municipality does not intend to add more streets of the capital to this list.
“For now, there are no plans to change or expand other existing restrictions, but the situation is constantly monitored. If negative trends in the behavior of electric scooter drivers are visible, it may be decided to introduce additional restrictions,” the representative of the municipality wrote in a comment.
From January of this year, new requirements for scooters adopted by the parliament came into force – the speed of scooters is limited, persons at least 16 years old can drive these vehicles, they are only allowed to ride on bicycle paths.
