The exhibits with images of bunnies are eye-popping: toys, cups, decorative plates, pens, soaps, candles, towels, clothes, piggy banks, jewelry, napkins, postcards, books and even a package of toilet paper.

The museum was founded and is managed by Daiva Truncienė, the long-time chairperson of the Sasnava community, elementary school and art teacher.

Together with like-minded “bunny girls”, she started organizing educations, which quickly became very popular.

Children are not only happy to listen to fairy tales or play in the museum yard.

Both children and adults test their culinary skills by baking cookies with images of bunnies or cakes in the shape of a bunny.

“The children pour the products themselves and everyone stirs the dough as many times as they are old. The oldest participant in our education was a 99-year-old senior citizen from Kalvarija. He carefully baked cookies, bunnies.

Everyone can take the baked goods home as bunny treats or have them at our place with tea, – said Daiva. – Recently, we have been baking cakes where hand contact is not required. That’s what we decided after the quarantine.”

The museum kitchen is usually hosted by volunteer R. Jarumbavičienė. She advises cake bakers, introduces them to culinary heritage, and tells how butter can be churned these days.

Bunny cake

Sasnavos Zuikienės shared the recipe for a bunny cake baked by children during education at the museum.

You will need:

  • 2 eggs
  • glasses of sugar
  • glass jam (preferably sour)
  • 2 teaspoons of soda
  • squeezed lemon juice (scented)
  • glasses of sour cream
  • a glass of grated carrots
  • 2 glasses of flour
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon

Mix all the products, pour the resulting mass into a tin and bake in an oven heated to 180 degrees for 30 minutes. If the tin is larger, all the products will be needed twice.
