The National Public Health Center reports that the smoke from the fire at the “Imedeksa” company can be dangerous to health.

“If you are outside and you see dark smoke, smell a specific smell, move to the windward side – that is, so that the wind does not carry the smoke towards you. Residents living closer to the fire are advised not to go outside, while staying at home – not to open vents, windows and doors.

If the house has mechanical ventilation systems, recuperation or air conditioning, we recommend turning off the systems. If you have wells, cover them and do not use them for drinking water. Do not leave animals outside. If you feel unwell, it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately.

When driving past the fire scene, it is recommended to close the car windows tightly.

We remind you – symptoms of acute exposure to pollutants: irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, shortness of breath, cough, weakened lung function (especially in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), increased susceptibility of the respiratory tract to respiratory infections (especially in children), exacerbated allergic inflammatory reactions of the respiratory tract.” – says the NVSC statement.

The municipality of Kretinga district also reported on the possible danger to human health on the social network Facebook.

“Due to the fire at UAB “Imedeksa” and possible air pollution, the residents of Kretinga, who live next to Klaipėda street, in the area called Lapyn, in the gardens of “Draugystės” and in the surrounding areas, are asked to close the windows of their houses, temporarily turn off the recovery systems and avoid being in the fresh air”, – the municipality announced on the social network.

The municipality also informed that car traffic is prohibited on Klaipėdos Street during the fire extinguishing works. Also, if there is no necessity, please do not drive on Šventotios g. and choose other travel routes.

The Department of Environmental Protection reports that the AAD laboratory has gone to take ambient air samples and measure particulate matter and other pollutants.

“A pollutant dispersion forecast for the next few hours is also being prepared, which will show the potential dispersion of pollutants and the impact zone, that is, in which area the concentration of pollutants in the air may be increased. The situation is being monitored, the public will be promptly informed upon receipt of the latest air quality research data,” the AAD statement reads.
