Lithuania supports Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s candidates for NATO leadership, says Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda.

He said this on Tuesday at a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands in Vilnius.

Lithuania supports Mr. M. Rutte’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General, the leader told journalists.

At the beginning of March, Politico found that Hungary opposes M. Rutte’s candidacy for NATO leadership, and a third of the 31 NATO members are still undecided on whether to support him.

According to NATO rules, the Secretary General must be elected by consensus, which requires that M. Rutte must ensure full support.

The term of office of the current head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, runs until October 1, 2024.

Mr. Stoltenberg has been leading the Alliance since 2014, his tenure was extended twice due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
