April 2 6 p.m. The presentation of Diana Tomkuviene’s and Asta Vandytė’s book “Ribbon Carpets” will take place in the Ėuolo hall of the Ėžuolynas library, 2nd floor, (Radastų str. 2, Kaunas).

Our ancestors used belts widely in Lithuanian household and rituals. Today we consider them symbols of national culture, admire them as handmade works of folk art. Even the thinnest ribbon attracts the eye with its color combinations, variety of patterns, but try to imagine 67 or 191 different ribbons sewn together or braided together! Such an abundance of colors and a fascinating variety of patterns will be the carpet of stripes.

“The tapestry carpet has the fact that when you look at it, you will always catch a gathering of newer thoughts.” F. Kirša. Our tapes. Spring, 1918, no. 1.

The book, intended for both specialists and the general public, presents almost all tape carpets known in Lithuania, kept in museums and privately. The stories of their creation and “life” are described. For those who want to weave ribbons, the book will serve as a guide, because it is richly illustrated with photos of ribbons, drawings of patterns, and also visually presents the methodology of weaving ribbons. The book contains a QR code that can be scanned on a phone to view recordings of weaving lessons.

Diana Tomkuvienė and Asta Vandytė, authors of the book, researchers and creators of the national costume, will take part in the event. The event will be hosted by the ethnologist dr. Asta Venskiene.

Books will be available for purchase at the launch.

The event will be photographed and/or filmed, so you may be seen in photos or videos of the event that may be published in various media.
