“We are consistently reviewing the general plan of Kaunas and expanding the list of squares. We include new areas in the city center and in more remote microdistricts.

Green spaces are of different sizes and conditions – it will be enough to supplement some squares with small architecture, decorate them with flower beds, in other places there will be playgrounds and sports grounds, pedestrian and bicycle paths”, Radeta Savickienė, head of the municipality’s Environment Department, told about the plans.

According to her, the square status allows green areas to be preserved and organized according to the needs of residents and local communities. This is especially important with increasing urbanization to improve air quality and further green the city.

Five areas in Petrašiūnai are recognized as squares: Ekskavatorininkų st. 8, Giraitė st. 4A, M.Gimbutienės str. 13, R. Kalantos st. 137 and T. Masiulio str. 14A.

Šančiai and Žaliakalnis will each have three new squares. These are the territories at the following addresses: A. Juozapavičius pr. 71 and A. Juozapavičius Ave. 139A, K.Petrauska str. 17A and Archive st. 52, green areas in M. Riomerio street near the buildings marked with numbers 6 and 10, as well as Lazūnų st. 15 and Kampo str. 61.

The green islands in Eiguliai at Ashigali St. have acquired the status of a protected square. 23 and Kleboniškis, Viešios street. The remaining two territories are located in Kalniečiai – between S. Žukauskas and P. Plechavičius streets and Ukmergės st. 9 and 9A addresses. (LS)
