At 5:32 a.m., a large fire broke out in a car scrap yard located on Panerių street in Vilnius and was extinguished.

“The good news is that the fire at 5:32 a.m. was liquidated, the head of rescue operations announced the liquidation of the fire. This means that there is no spread of fire, and there are no open sources of fire either. We managed to protect the buildings nearby, we have no casualties or injuries. The remains of metal are still being poured at the scene, I am at the fire scene myself, there is no danger of smoke,” Donatas Gurevičius, representative of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department, told Elta on Thursday morning.

About 60 firefighters from the capital worked at the scene of the incident at night, now a smaller force will work, some crews will remain on duty.

According to D. Gurevičius, due to the fact that the firefighters are still using water from the hydrants located on Panerių Street, this section is still closed, and the section of Panerių Street is still protected by police officers.

Firefighters managed to protect three buildings from the fire, they are of storage and industrial use, the company’s hoist and metal shredder were saved.

Medical crews were on duty at the scene all the time, as well as representatives of the municipality, police, company, and environmentalists.

According to D. Gurevičius, the water used for extinguishing the fire was sucked up by special tanks and taken away so that it would not enter the sewers and pollute.

“The fire is localized, and liquidation work continues, we hope that it will be extinguished soon. We do not predict when this will happen,” Giedrius Vaičiulis, the chief specialist of the Situation Coordination Department of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department, told Eltai on Thursday morning.

Throughout the night, the piles of waste were excavated with special equipment and poured with water.

“A pile nine meters high – there’s metal and other things there, that’s why it’s a landfill. Congestion works greatly complicate this process. Railway and company equipment is working, Vilnius waters are helping, railway workers are helping, specialized equipment is being used for transshipment works”, G. Vaičiulis told Elta.

ELTA reminds that the fire was localized on Wednesday evening at 10:20 p.m. Containment is confirmed when the fire stops spreading, but the fire is not completely extinguished.

An area of 1,300 square meters was covered by different fire sources, there were still smoldering and burning fires in separate places.

According to PAGD, the fire was reported at 6 p.m. 32 min. According to PAGD, no victims have been reported yet.

The Director of Corporate Affairs of Lietuvos Geležinkelių (LTG) Group Aleksandras Zubriakovas confirmed to Eltai that the fire started on the territory of Lietuvos Geležinkelių. However, the company UAB “Ruvis” is currently located in the area where the fire broke out.

The National Public Health Center (NVSC) urged residents to close windows and not go outside due to increased pollution.

NVSC also recommends institutions near the scene to continue the educational process remotely on Thursday.
