That this offer is just a scam 15 minutes TVOU representatives warn in the provided comment.

“This is false information. Fake social media accounts and fake websites share false information about lost luggage for sale, prompting people to open misleading websites. Lithuanian airports do not provide such services.

We refuted the spread of false information on our social networks and also reported fake accounts to Facebook. We urge people to be vigilant, not to click on unclear links and to protect their personal data”, TVOU representatives warn internet users.

A known problem

Tadas Vasiliauskas, the representative of the Lithuanian Airports to the media, assures that many airports in various countries face the same scheme.

“This is a recurring phenomenon and a problem not only in Lithuania – almost all European airports face it.

The model is identical – fake accounts are created and it is offered to buy lost suitcases with all the supposedly very valuable things in them cheaply”, – the representative of TVOU suggested not to trust similar “offers” from other countries’ airports on the Internet.

Valuable finds are state property

T. Vasiliauskas warned that the sale of lost luggage is not even theoretically possible, as it would be contrary to the laws in force in the country.

First of all, all lost pieces of luggage are stored for a certain legal period, during which staff try to find the owners of the items, and if they fail, action is taken.

Items found in luggage, depending on the content, are divided into categories: textile, plastic, clothing, electronics, paper, food products.

After that, decisions are made regarding the further fate of the contents of the luggage – part of the unusable items are disposed of, clothes and similar items are given to charity, and valuable finds are considered state property and handed over to the State Tax Inspectorate in the prescribed manner.

15 minutes verdict: lie. None of the Lithuanian airports organize sales of lost luggage, this is a fraud scheme designed to cheat money.

The publication was prepared in 15 minutes in partnership with Metawhich aims to stop the spread of misleading news on the social network. More about the program and its rules – here.
