The decrease was caused by a decrease in the loading of coal, crude oil and petroleum products, but more iron ore and scrap, liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as cargo containers are being loaded this year, according to a statement from the port authority.

“This shows that European industry is still suffering from high energy prices and weak demand.” Meanwhile, increased container flows reflect the first signs of recovery in international trade. Container handling increased by 2.0 percent. up to 3.289 million TEU, and their cargo increased by 3.3 percent. up to 32.532 million tons.

Liquid cargo flows decreased by 3.1 percent. to 52.643 million tons, of which crude oil – 1.9 percent. up to 25.781 million tons, oil products – 3.4 percent. up to 14.580 million tons, but LNG – increased by 3.6 percent. to 3.119 million tons.

Ro-ro cargo decreased by 3.8 percent. to 6.333 million tons, other general cargo – increased by 7.4 percent. up to 1.463 million tons.

Bulk cargo flows decreased by 4.5 percent. up to 17.148 million tons, of which coal – 27.4 percent. up to 5.396 million tons, agricultural production – 23.9 percent. to 2.493 million tons, and iron ore and scrap – increased by 16.5 percent. to 7.191 million tons.

In 2023, 438.8 million tons were handled in the port of Rotterdam. tons of cargo – 6.1 percent. less than last year.
