My farm – stories of wheat and rape revealed at the BASF field day festival

--

Kėdainiai district Undaunted by the rain, farmers gathered in large numbers at the field day festival “Revydas laukaui” organized by BASF, which took place in Kėdainiai district. farmers in the Župerkai farm. Here they had the opportunity to hear useful advice from BASF agronomists, the experiences of foreign countries and listen to Mantos Župerka’s experience in growing winter wheat and rape.

Before going to the fields, farmers are introduced to the situation in other countries. It turns out that unpredictable weather conditions are not only challenging for Lithuanian farmers. In Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, rape started to flower a few weeks earlier. It has become more frequent here due to the changeable weather cases of verticillosis, so farmers increasingly choose plant protection products with an active ingredient Revysol®to deal with this disease.

The mild and wet winter “gifted” many grain diseases to the Germans. In addition to septarioza and stem rot, yellow rust and powdery mildew are also found. Therefore, most farmers choose fungicides to keep their crops healthy Balaya® and Flexity®.

And here in Poland, fomosis, which is fought with a growth regulator, is a headache for rapeseed growers Caryx®. It is true that this year, Poles can already purchase a new product to fight this disease in the spring – Architect®. It consists of three active substances: pyraclostrobin, mepiquat chloride, calcium prohexadione.

According to BASF business development manager Kazimieros Poškaus, Architect® should also reach Lithuanian farmers this year. The registration process of this product is currently underway in Lithuania. The test results show that Architect® has the potential to become the new market standard for fomosis control

Condition of winter wheat and canola

BASF agronomist manager According to Tomas Kazakevičius, most of the earlier winter wheat varieties fully or partially reached the BBCH-32 growth stage already in the last weeks of April, if mixtures of growth regulators were used Cycocel® + Medax® Max or Medax® Top.

“I don’t even doubt that we will use a growth regulator at the stage of the flag leaf in Suvalkia Terpal®so that the upper internodes are even shorter and the harvest is even more protected,” said the agronomist.

BASF agronomist manager According to Tomas Kazakevičius, most of the earlier winter wheat varieties fully or partially reached the BBCH-32 growth stage in the last weeks of April.

According to T. Kazakevičius, Suvalkija farmers usually use the first spraying to control wheat diseases Balaya Flex Pack, Revystar® XL Pack or Priaxor Power Pack.

And here in the wheat fields of Northern Lithuania, where fungicides have not been used, it is now possible to detect the beginnings of leaf septoriosis, powdery mildew, and in some places early streak, and reticular streak is easily found in barley.

“As the weather warms, those fields that don’t use growth regulators will really jump up.” What can be done in such a situation? (…) Can be used Medax® Top or Medax® Max. These products consist of two active ingredients. One works quickly – it effectively stops the growth of plants within a few days. The other is easily released into the plant, so it creates an effective, fast and long-lasting effect”, says BASF agronomist manager Žygymantas Petraitis.

The BASF specialist was surprised by the winter barley in Joniškis district, because a disease uncharacteristic of the Lithuanian climate – brown rust – had spread to them. At first, the agronomist thought it was just a coincidence, but after inspecting more fields, he realized it had become a problem.

“If we don’t do anything after a few days when the heat comes, the disease will spread very quickly and damage the crops. (…) Along with growth regulators, if they have not been used yet, a fungicide should be used Syrex®“, what to do if you notice brown rust in winter barley fields, advised Ž. Petraitis.

“The winter crops in northern Lithuania look very beautiful, so it would be a shame if these beautiful crops with such a large mass and productive future stalks lay dormant or were damaged by diseases, when we have so many effective solutions for plant protection,” said BASF agronomist manager Žygymantas Petraitis

And here, in rapeseed, one of the most harmful pests has become the garden grubs, which agronomists advise to fight from the fall using Butisan® family products. This is exactly what farmer M. Župerka did in part of the rapeseed fields, because in Kėdainiai district of Žliūgii. especially a lot.

K. Poškus named verticillosis as another big problem in Lithuania, the spread of which is increasing. One of the reasons is the growing areas of minimally cultivated land. However, even this disease can be effectively treated. The fungicide gave particularly good results Revydas®.

“Three years of trials with Revydu® showed that it reduces the spread of verticillosis reasonably well and also increases the 1000-grain weight. (…) In one year, even 1.0 t/ha yield supplement was obtained, in other years, when it was drier, 400 kg/ha supplement was obtained, but the 3-year average is 620 kg/ha. And this is a really big addition”, – the specialist briefly discussed the results of the tests.

In North-Eastern Lithuania, the potential of rapeseed is greater in those fields where farmers started fighting weeds in the fall.

“One of Rokiškis r. the farm had planned to carry out all the sprayings before the sprouting of rapeseed, but the autumn was quite dry, so they doubted whether the herbicide would really work in some of the fields. So, in some places, the spraying was done after the rapeseed sprouted, but it can be seen that such weed control was really not enough there. Where they sprayed before germination, even though it was dry, the product did not lose its effectiveness because the rain came later. And in this way, they controlled quite a lot of weeds, the rapeseed did not stretch and overwintered well”, – BASF urged not to be afraid of a dry autumn agronomist manager Donatas Kavaliauskas.

Fungicide Revydas® farmers have already managed to make sure of its effectiveness

Farmer Mantas with fungicide Revydas® some of the canola fields were sprayed last year to test it. And the results did not disappoint – the plants remained healthy for a longer period of time, so this year they plan to use this product in all rapeseed fields.

When M. Župerka was asked what the biggest advantage of this product was, he named the new active ingredient without hesitation. Because rapeseed is already resistant to most active substances.

Kėdainiai district farmer Mantas Župerka has already managed to make sure of Revydas fungicide® effectiveness

“BASF is a large company that manufactures products and launches them on the market only after testing them. (…) The people who represent those products have proven time and time again that they work and have an effect,” – fungicide Revydas® the effectiveness is not doubted by the farmer.

Kėdainiai r., who came to the outdoor day festival. farmer Aidan Dumbinskas also plans to test rapeseed fungicide Revydas®.

“The main expectation from this product is higher yield and more money. After all, we work for money, that’s how we find a place to spend our free time”, joked A. Dumbinskas.

According to the farmer, in order to make the horticulture farm economically strong, it is necessary to use high-quality plant protection products, because now plants are attacked by much more diseases than before.

According to Kėdainiai r. farmer Aidan Dumbinskas, in order to work profitably, it is difficult to do without plant protection products

“To get a good harvest, it is not enough to use fungicides only once. They both protect against diseases and act as regulators, so rapeseed plants have to use them 2-3 times throughout the season, including autumn.

Without fungicides and other plant protection products, it is hardly possible to grow a good, healthy and large harvest”, A. Dumbinskas has no doubts and adds that the advantages of this product encourage you to try it.

One of them is the possibility of using it for a longer period of time, as a fungicide Revydas® canola can be sprayed even before the buds open, until the end of flowering.

The long period of use is also important because if you enter the rape earlier, while they are still small, you don’t have to have a tall tractor to avoid damaging the crops. This means that simpler techniques are sufficient to use this fungicide.

In addition, the product is water-based, so it not only washes out easily from the container, but also dissolves, which prevents the nozzles from clogging. He also consists of 2 active substances – Review® and boscalid, which provides long-term effective protection against disease and helps prevent the development of resistance to pathogens.

The view in the fields of farmer M. Župerka is pleasing

After gaining knowledge and hearing useful advice, the farmers headed towards Manto’s winter wheat and rapeseed fields. And their image pleases both the farmer himself and the consultants.

M. Župerka was sowing winter wheat in one field Skagen. October 5 they spray with herbicide Pontos® (0.6 l/ha). April 4 use growth regulators Medax® Max (0.4 l/ha) and Cycocel® (0.7 l/ha), as well as a fungicide Flexity® (0.3 l/ha).

Mantas herbicide Pontos® he already sprayed all the fields last year, because he was convinced of its effectiveness – it perfectly protected against hornets even where there were a lot of them. So the farmer is happy with the result.

He also plans to spray winter wheat Balaya® (0.6 l/ha). According to BASF agronomist manager Pauliaus Paulauskis, for the first spraying of wheat are also effective Revystar XL Pack and Priaxor Power Pack.

According to the consultant, growing winter wheat varieties such as Skagenit is recommended to use a growth regulator in the third spray along with fungicides Terpal®.

On the other side of the road, farmers inspected Manto’s winter rapeseed DK Excited field. They on August 16. sprayed with herbicide Butisan® 400 (1,875 l/ha) and another herbicide. September 5 spraying with a mixture of growth regulators was carried out Juventus® 90 (0.35 l/ha) + Caryx® (0.4 l/ha), with the same rates of these plant protection products, rapeseed was sprayed again on September 22.

April 10 sprayed with a growth regulator-fungicide Juventus® 90 (0.6 l/ha) and insecticide. Fungicide spraying is also planned Revydas® (0.75 l/ha).

Farmer Mantas Župerka used the herbicide Butisan to combat grubs in the winter rapeseed field.®

“Gingers are a big problem here as well. For the second year, there is no herbicide other than Butisan®. Of course, we had quite a few challenges with the growth regulators from the fall, because the high heat took its toll – the plants grew rapidly.

We tried a new fungicide Review®we did a test and in the fall, when we cut, we will see according to the stalks, according to the harvester’s instantaneous yield readings, whether there is a difference or not.

This year is the first time that we sprayed all the rapeseed in the spring Juventus®in order to slow down the growth a little”, – Mantas shared his experience with other farmers.
