The main part of every film festival is the film program, consisting of premieres, films that have become classics and meetings with filmmakers. What will be seen this year “Cinema under the stars. Junior” festival audience?

A movie based on the popular French book series Little Nikolia, a heart-wrenching story of friendship Alien, the legendary family sing-along musical The Sound of Music, a cult teen romance featuring 10 Reasons Why I Hate You and Dumbo the Elephant path to recognition. All this is intertwined in this year’s festival “Cinema under the Stars”. Junior” in the program, where both classes of teenagers and families with elementary school children will find the perfect movie for themselves.

“When collecting films for the festival program, we set ourselves the task of shaping it like a reduced festival program for adults. This is how a national premiere or a special session with the director appeared. For other movies, we’ve assigned certain categories that tell you what to expect from the movie: World of Disney, Love & Relationships, Sci-Fi, or Classic Musicals. The programs of major festivals are formed on similar principles, only much more broadly. “Cinema under the stars. “Junior” will allow you to get acquainted with these principles and prepare little by little for the experience of an adult film festival”, says festival director Andrė Balžekienė.

This year’s youth festival program includes 6 films. Most of the festival screenings will take place during the day, they are mainly intended for students to come to the cinema with the whole class. In the evenings, starting at 6 p.m., the whole family can try the festival experience. “Cinema under the stars. “Junior” film screenings will be supplemented with presentations and education organized by the festival’s partners – the “Youngblood” film school and the emotional support “Jaunimo Linija”.

Festival “Cinema under the stars. Junior program films:

The national premiere of the festival is the adventure story “The Treasure of Little Nicolas” (orig. Le Trésor du Petit Nicolas) based on the motifs of French literary classics. The film tells about a united circle of school friends, which is about to be separated by an unfortunate circumstance: Nikolia’s father is transferred to another city for work. The friends must foil the move plan. The film is suitable for children from the age of seven, it will be shown dubbed in Lithuanian and additionally subtitled in Lithuanian.

10 Things I Hate About You (orig. 10 Things I Hate About You) is constantly on must-see teen movie lists. This is a modern version of Shakespeare’s play. The film helped to break into Olympus for three actors of the film: Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is suitable for young people from 10 years old and will be shown in the original English language with Lithuanian subtitles.

“Sound of Music” (orig. Sound of Music), a film with a proud history of almost 60 years, is a family musical classic that cannot help but sing along to the popular songs “Do Re Mi” or “Edelweiss”. The film was awarded 5 Oscars, the American Film Institute considers this film the 4th best musical in the history of cinema. The film is suitable for the whole family and will be shown in the original English language with Lithuanian subtitles.

Dumbo is only Disney’s fourth film, but it already has an Oscar for Best Musical, a financial success and a cultural legacy in its pocket. The story of an elephant with giant ears that is different and therefore does not fit into the circus is a great space to talk about tolerance for everyone who is not like the majority. The film is suitable for the whole family, it will be shown dubbed in Lithuanian and additionally subtitled in Lithuanian.

The gem of science fiction cinema is Steven Spielberg’s film “Alien” (orig. Extra Terrestrial – ET), which tells the story of the friendship between a boy and an alien. Although the director is admired for his technical solutions, they do not overshadow the emotional line of the film, but harmoniously complement it. The film won 4 Oscars and many other awards and is called the perfect combination of science fiction and human feelings. The film is suitable for children from 7 years old and will be shown in the original English language with Lithuanian subtitles.

The special screening of the festival is the documentary film “Menstrual Periods” by Lina Plioplytė, a director living and creating in the USA, which analyzes the truths and superstitions of the cycle, which are interesting and relevant for both teenagers and adult women. The director herself will take part in the screening of the film. The film is recommended for young people from 10 years old.

Open-air cinema festival for young people “Cinema under the stars. Junior” will take place on the terrace of the MO Museum on June 3-7, May 8 and 9, the audience can buy tickets at the lowest price – 4.5 EUR.
