08:05 | spec. services warn: Russia is preparing sabotage in Europe – bombings, arson and other damage

The conclusions of the special services of three unnamed countries indicate that Russia is preparing sabotage throughout Europe, writes the Financial Times (FT).

The employees of the special services indicate that Russia has already begun to actively organize secret bombings, arson and damage to infrastructure, both directly and through intermediaries, without taking into account possible human casualties. These operations are more aggressive and coordinated than previous isolated attacks in Europe, writes the FT.

Representatives of special services are increasingly speaking about the ever-increasing threat, trying to draw attention to its seriousness. Germany’s intelligence chief has expressed concern about the risk of state-controlled acts of sabotage with a “high potential for harm”. European governments have also received information from NATO security services about coordinated and large-scale Russian tests.

The FT mentions several attacks in Europe believed to have involved Russia:

  • The burning of a warehouse containing aid to Ukraine in Great Britain;
  • several railway accidents in Sweden;
  • an attempt to deface railway markings in the Czech Republic;
  • the attack on the foreign minister’s car in Estonia;
  • attack on military and logistics facilities in Germany.

“Russia’s increased aggressiveness reflects the country’s desire to reassert itself after a particularly difficult period related to the depletion of Russian special services forces after the collapse of the Soviet Union. All this raises serious concerns in European intelligence circles, which are trying to draw attention to the growing threat from Russia and are calling for increased vigilance and focus to counter this threat,” writes the FT.
