Alliance planners say a scenario in which Russia attacks any NATO member in the near future is unlikely, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported. Nevertheless, the alliance is still preparing for coalition combat operations.

WSJ recalled that until recently, some NATO officials said that Russian intervention can be expected in the next few years. Now, according to the publication, the attitude of NATO planners has changed. In their opinion, in the short-term perspective, Moscow may try to provoke a conflict in a neighboring country, trying to win over Russian emigrants living there, and use the resulting tension as a pretext for intervention.

Preparedness for coalition combat action has again become a NATO priority, and soldiers must know how to operate together on the battlefield, the WSJ emphasized.

He recalled the Crystal Arrow exercises held in Latvia in March. During them, NATO troops from 14 countries simulated stopping an enemy who had broken through the border and was moving towards Riga. , which are near Russia.

NATO countries have repeatedly warned about a possible Russian invasion of one of the member territories. In January, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius spoke about this. His colleague from Denmark, Troels Lund Poulsen, predicted that this could happen in the next 3-5 years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin responded that Moscow is not interested in a conflict with NATO, and problems in this sphere are created artificially.
