Early on Friday morning, officers of the Kalvarija border checkpoint of the VSAT Varėna border team at the village of Salaperaugis (Kalvarija municipality), on the road Suvalkai-Marijampolė, stopped to check the documents of the driver of the Fiat Ducato car transporter with a trailer that had entered from Poland. The car with Ukrainian registration numbers was driven by a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen.

During the control, the Ukrainian presented the car’s documents to the border guards. However, VSAT officers did not notice the driver’s license allegedly issued in his country. After the border guards examined it more thoroughly, it turned out that the document was not produced in accordance with the requirements for the production of securities. This made it possible to make a plausible assumption that the driver’s license held by the Ukrainian is a fake.

The border guards detained the driver for 48 hours and put him in custody.

Another suspected forged document was discovered by Kalvarija border guards on Sunday evening, when they stopped to check the documents of the passengers of a shuttle bus heading towards Poland on the Lazdijai-Akmeniai road near the village of Tarnaukas (Lazdijai district). A shuttle bus registered in Lithuania ran on the Tallinn-Prague route.

In addition to other passengers, there was also a supposed Belgian citizen. It was he who caused suspicion to VSAT officials. Upon closer inspection of the identity card of a Belgian citizen submitted in his name, the VSAT officials found out that it, like in the first case, is probably fake.

The passenger going to Prague was taken off the bus by the border guards and brought to the Kalvarija border checkpoint for a detailed inspection.

Here it became clear that a 19-year-old Turkish citizen tried to use the suspected forgery of the document. After the search of the person and belongings, a passport and an identity card of a Turkish citizen issued in his name were found.

VSAT officials detained both foreigners. Due to the falsification of the document or possession of it, pre-trial investigations have been initiated in the VSAT Varėna border police station. They are led by the prosecutors of the Marijampolė and Alytus district prosecutor’s offices of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office. For such a criminal act, the law provides for arrest or imprisonment for up to four years.

The Ukrainian citizen was remanded in custody for two months.

In the near future, it will be decided what preventive measure to assign to the Turkish citizen.
